Okay, here's the latest rumor/report. George Lucas is meeting with Disney executives later this month. The talks are going to involve expanding the Lucas' presence in Disney's theme parks, including a "Lucas Land" project in development at Disney Hollywood Studios (the new name for Disney-MGM Studios come Jan. 2008) and giving Lucas control over development of Tomorrowland in Disneyland. Also in these talks may be the possibility of airing the 2 upcoming Star Wars TV show- the CG "Clone Wars" and the live-action series that takes place between Episodes III and IV- on the various Disney platforms. Could Disney be made of win?

Mods, please either mirror/move this thread to the Disney Animation forum and TEB.

There goes my hopes for the cartoon landing on Toonami . . . this thing will be such a massive boost to Jetix that it won't even be funny.

Dammit, who the hell as Disney hired to make so many 'win' decisions lately?

What confuses me about this is terms of copyright.

We all know both trilogies of the Star Wars movies were distrubuted by 20th Centry Fox, right? Well, Disney have a nack of buying a few franchises if they so wished to and even though the Star Wars franchise is still the property of Fox along with Lucasfilm, Disney and Lucasfilm of course have teamed up before to create the "Star Tours" ride in some of the Disney parks around the world.

But Lucasfilm teamed up with Cartoon Network, a property of TimeWarner, to create the first "Clone Wars" series for the network so Warner has a peice of the rights in some way as well. So, what the heck is going on? It's not making any sense!

Lucafilm owns the rights to the entire Star Wars property. And I think that includes all the cartoons produced as well.
I don't think they share the rights with anyone, except film distribution rights (Fox) and television broadcast rights (for Clone Wars, which CN gets).

If Jetix gets the new Star Wars CG, then I'll have to get Toon Disney (some how). Meanwhile, the live action series would be headed to ABC or ABC Family if this holds up.

Lucasfilm owns the rights to anything Star Wars, including the books, with the exception of Star wars Clone Wars. They authorized CN to make Clone Wars, and CN released the series on DVD, not Lucasfilm. They do get recognized though for half the production costs that they provided.

IMO, Star Wars is done like dinner. Over! Hurray! Disney ought to come up with its own ideas for a change instead of purchasing everybody else's. I thought that ended with the Eisner era...

Actually, Fox distributed Clone Wars on DVD (I'm staring at the Volume 1 DVD). But, yeah, Lucas owns Star Wars lock, stock, and barrel.
