LPR Frustrations!

Blanflier,
Have you taken the meRAB twice a day, one in the morning 1/2 HOUR BEFORE YOU EAT, the other in the evening 1/2 HOUR BEFORE DINNER? And have you continued taking the meRAB for AT LEAST 8 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS? I've been told I must stick to that 'plan' before the meRAB will work. Some lucky people have earlier results, some have later results, but there must be consistency to your program. Don't give up!

Weight gain comes from more 'calories going in' than 'going out' or sometimes water retention, but water retention won't last. It's really that simple. Cellulite does not come from constipation. Have you cut out coffee, dairy (butter, cheese, cream, milk), all baked gooRAB? If so, I believe you ought to see a weight loss. It's almost like the 'South Beach Diet.'

Are you eating 4 small meals a day, instead of three larger meals? If not, try that. I find 'Saltine' crackers are a good snack between meals. They contain baking soda that helps to neutralize the stomach contents.

Fruit and veggies will help to relieve the constipation. Please try drinking a lot of water, at least an 8 oz glass, 8 times a day (especially one with each meal). Put a teaspoon of Benefiber in 3 of those glasses of water (it dissolves without a trace). Another thing that helps relieve constipation is some form of low impact exercise, even just walking. Movement creates movement, if you get my drift! Another benefit of walking is weight loss!

Good luck!!

I also had IBS-but that was before any of the LPR started, so I wonder what is going on inside my intestines and if there might be some underlying cause and if LPR is not only a symptom of the big problem. That is why I will also be seeing a GI Dr. soon. Have you tried the apple cider vingar, and baking soda recipe? I plan to try that soon, a good friend swears by it-she has GERD and says she is medicine free now.

apriljudy - I'm suprised your taking Prilosec-my Dr. told me that won't phase LPR reflux, only GERD. Does it work for you?

I take alot of enzymes when I eat, I also sleep on a large slant. My problem is mostly when I sleep. I rarely get LPR when I'm not laying down.

april judy-I saw a wholistic nutritionist that does reflexology muscle testing. I also have LPR and she said it's all related (from a nutritionist side) to my digestion and I'm not digesting food. Therefore she had me start taking enzyme tablets as well. They do seem to help a bit. Only been on them for 2 days now. I will update you again.

Do you think your weight gain is related to the medication?? I have been taking Nexium for about 3 months now. I am real close to cutting it all out because of the weight/fat mostly gain and constipation.

I have LPR also.

Blanflier, you ought to be able to get your LPR 'in check.' Not to disagree with your MD, but as I said, Prilosec is really working for me. As it's an OTC med, perhaps you can give it a try.

And please, limit your diet. I think that's key! Coffee, chocolate, tea, anything with caffeine, citrus, dairy, anything fried, are all 'no-no's'. (This eating plan side effect: weight loss!)

Try eating Saltine crackers, especially as an evening snack. They're made with baking soda. I think they neutralize the stomach content. (Used to take them for morning sickness, when pregnant....too long ago to mention..LOL)

Good luck!

I get the mucus feeling when I am having a reflux episode. I usually feel it in my chest, its horrible. It interupts my breathing and causes basic discomfort but when I take my meRAB it goes away. I thought I had asthma it was so bad, I say a specialist and he said execessive mucus was related to acid reflux. He gave me Syrabicort to use when things get bad, but as long as I take my meRAB and eat small amounts I don't have that feeling usually.

Thanks for all of your tips, about 80% of that I've done. Except my Dr. did not recommend taking 2 doses of Nexium. However-I did call a specialist in LPR online and called their office and they also said they tell their patients to take 2 doses. I have decided to go off the meRAB for a while and see how I do. I already lost 2 lbs. within 2 days and have had some relief with constipation. I do drink tons of water-at least 8 servings. I was exercising faithfully for about 2 months with no results. I was walking on the treadmill and some muscle building stuff with the exercise ball-NO results. That is why I am so discouraged. I've tried all those things you have said-also increased fiber intake and taken a supplement, and don't see one bit of improvement. Therefore-I kind of gave up. I did take the Nexium also for over 12 weeks solid. Thanks again for all of your advice, it's nice to know that people do go thru this and can help others.

Char - I am SO with you -- if I read all the side effects I am sure to have them :) :) I just let the pharmacist tell me the BIGGIES to watch out for :):)

I too have developed IBS AFTER having had GERD for a while - what joy -both enRAB :) :)

At least we have each other to talk to!

Thanks for all your tips. I will definately give them a try!! And especially the saltines!

Hi CharBerry,

Yes, I have tried to get off the PPI's cold turkey (after only 8 weeks back in May), and ended up in the ER and had to also see a cardiologist. I flat out could not breathe at all and was vomiting. I just was so new to this I didn't know the cause. I have found out more on the internet than from any of my docs (Gastro, ENT or Family doc). I would really like to "wean" off of them somehow and just go back to being drug free and still living with LPR, since I felt exactly the same before the meRAB and was at least able to eat. Now, I can't eat hardly anything without being full almost right away, so have also lost 20 lbs and don't want to lose more. I am trying to get up energy to swim a few times a week (hot, hot in TX) after not sleeping, and that's hard, but I know I need to do it to keep some kind of muscle tone (I am 51). I am glad you are hopeful after all the time you have dealt with it. I need to somehow keep that faith also, and praying and trying to meditate does help. I'm tired of having to tell my family and frienRAB I'm still not better--they can't understand it. Well, hope I hear from you and have a good weekend!

Well, you know the old saying, Misery loves company" and I seem to have plenty! Makes sense that one part of our digestive systems could effect another.
Yes, what joy.

Hi Blanfier,

What is the baking soda recipe you mention? I would like to try it. If I have anything acidic at all though (I'm frightened to try ACV), the pain in my throat and ears is too much from the LPR. I've been on Protonix 2x day for 10 weeks now, and my IBS started after being on the meRAB; however, my LPR is so bad, I also have to take Pepsid and antaciRAB most days along with the Protonix (my doc knows this). I would like to try the baking soda recipe in the hope that I can replace some of these meRAB and be able to get through the day (and night) better.
Thanks for sharing the recipe if you know it!
