My 14 year old daughter plays soccer and received a stress fracture (lower lurabar #5) on the right side of her back in early October. It took months to confirm because the cat scan didn't clearly show the fracture. After seeing a pediatric spine specialist, we found out for sure that is was fractured. She has been going tthrough months of physical therapy to strengthen her core and relax the muscles surrounding the fracture area. However, she still experiences extreme pain when she runs. Those muscles just lock up and it takes a while for them to release. Is this normal? I am pretty sure her core is very strong by now. Would it be better for her to get a deep tissue massage several times a week? The physical therapist does give her a 10 minute deep tissue massage three times a week, but I am thinking a full blown hour of deep massage would help these muscles more right now. Any thoughts?

If she's already getting 1o min massages, it may indeed help, do you know of a masseus that does medical massage? or deep tissue work? I personally like shihatsu.

Just inform the masseaus of the fracture area, and see trying wont hurt, but, depenRAB on how close you can get to the area on your daughter for the massage for the proper area too. What about those icey hot bandages they have out now, maybe she could put those on and hopefully assist the muscles with the heat that comes off the bandages to sooth the musles?

Or before a meet when she's going to be running, have her use a heating pad for 1/2 hr before she goes to loosen up the muscles and see if that helps?
