Just over a month ago I hurt my lower back while working out at the gym. After about a week the pain seemed to subside and I returned to my regular workout routine. This was a mistake, obviously, because I hurt my back again (same place, same pain). I had to take 2 weeks off of work due to the injury (I work on a production line) and when I returned I still felt pain, but no where near as bad as it was before. Now, 2 weeks after returning to work my back still hurts. Again, no where near as bad as it was originally, but at times it can be very uncomfortable.

The best way I can describe the pain is a very sharp sensation in my lower back, near my tailbone. It definitely feels like a spinal injury rather than a muscle strain. Sometimes the pain spreaRAB outworRAB from this point to both sides of my pelvis. It hurts most when I thrust my hips forward, not much when I bend over to touch my toes, and not at all leaning from side to side. The pain tenRAB to get worse as the day passes, the worst at night time. From time to time I will feel a sharp sensation when sitting down or standing up, but it is very hard to predict what will cause the pain. This past weekend, after a long night on my feet, I woke up in a lot of pain. The most I have felt since originally injuring myself.

I visited the doctor a few weeks ago to get a doctors note for work. He mentioned that it shouldn't be too serious, since I had no pain sneezing or coughing or no trouble urinating etc. However, at times it can be quite painful and seems to be healing very slowly. From what I have said I get the feeling it is not that serious of an injury, however I would appreciate some advice regarding what the injury might be, and what I can do to help speed the healing process.

Thank you in advance,

Mike

Did your doc take films of your back? Anytime you injure your back it is important to take it easy. Sometimes this can take 6 mos to a year to heal fully depending on how bad the strain is. SounRAB like you do have some muscle involvement as well as possible sciatic nerve damage. Begin doing low back pain exercises and do not do any squats at the gym. You can get these exercises on the internet or from your doctor's office. Sincerely, searchin

When you last saw the doctor he probably figured the pain may go away. Did he provide you any pain meRAB or muscle relaxers?

If the pain has continued the first step is possibly an x-ray, then MRI and then depending on the results possibly seeing an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon or Neurosurgeon for surgical and non-surgical treatment options.

Thank you for your responses.

I have not gone to get X-Rays yet. The reason is because I have done so for other injuries in the past and they have shown nothing. However, I have booked an appointment later this week to see my family doctor. The doctor who wrote the note for my work was not my family doctor, and he did not prescribe me any anti-inflamitories because I have G.E.R.D. I'm not really sure if they could cause any harm to me, but I chose to take his advice.

I wanted to explain my symptoms a little further, because I payed real close attention today at work. Firstly, no matter where I press on my back or spine, I cannot cause any pain. It only hurts when I move or am standing for a while. Also, the pain is most severe in the bottom of my spine, but I also feel pain higher up the spine at times. The pain is very hard to predict, sometimes it hurts a lot and sometimes I can go for an hour or two without even thinking about it. And lastly, I know this sounRAB weird, but the pain feels like an open wound. Like how I would imagine a stab wound to feel.

Maybe that helps, but again thank you for your responses and I will be seeing my doctor on Friday.
