Low Sound Quality on Some Bell Channels

Hi.

Maybe this question has been answered in the past, and if it has, I apoligize.

Just recently got hooked up with Bell TV. I have two recievers in my home, a 4100 on an LG LCD 37" TV and the other one, a 3100, on a Panasonic 32" rear projection (older style) tv.

The 4100 has some sound quality issues on certain channels, like the movie networks 300-305, where I literally have to crank the volume on the tv up to close to 100 to get any decent sound from the channel. But if i turn it to citytv toronto, for example, the sound is great at 20.

The 3100 has no sound issues at all.

Anyone else experience this type of sound quality problem? Any solutions? It only seems to happen on certain channels. My in-laws have a 4100 on their Sony flatscreen LCD and they get great sound at 10. Who knows.

How are you connecting the Audio from the 4100 to the TV.? If you are using the Composite connections, do you have the same Audio level on that TV with the 3100.?
 
Hi.

On both tv's I am connecting the receiver with just A/V cables. Yellow - video, and red/white - audio. It is connected directly into my TV Video 1 inputs.
 
And using the same cables on the same TV you get wildly different Audio levels with the 3100 & 4100.? If yes, try to exchange the 4100, sounds (pun intended) to be defective.
 
I think it most likely the 4100, they are cheap and nasty.

Nothing to loose with trying the 3100 on the TV though.

I wouldn't assume it's the tv. Some channels, it works perfectly fine. I will try it.
 
well i have a 5900 and sometimes i had to put the sound very high to understand a movie. just like i did with gran torino. i don't know why!
 
Irony! I noticed it on Gran Torino too...on 300 the movie network. I find its only on the 4100 receiver on the LCD TV and it's particular channels, like the Movie netowrks, and american stations like FOX, CBS, ABC, etc. I had to crank Gran Torino to 90 out of 100. :mad:

I would have to think it's the receiver, cause my DVD player is connected directly to the same tv and it's got great sound quality at 10, out of 100.

It's almost like there should be a separate volume level on the reciever and it's set to low, but i've looked. If the 3100 sounds better, I may just get my hands on another 3100. It seems alot of people are sticking to 3100's, even though the 4100 is supposedly the "newer" and "better" receiver.
 
I do not have a 4100 but I thought there was some kind of setting to change from Dolby to DTS or something in the Menu. I know you are not using the Optical Output but it might still have some result for you.
 
Yes Pinza. You are correct. There are three different settings. Dolby only, Dolby/PCM and PCM only. I believe PCM is mono. I read in the manual that Dolby/PCM should be selected and any channels with Dolby 5.1, it will adjust accordingly.

That is the only setting I can see. If it happens that it's the 4100, I may just get my hands on a 3100 and have to change all the information with Bell. :(
 
You should keep you eyes open for a 6131 at $99, then you can add an External Drive to turn it into a PVR and you are HD Ready too.
 
I don't think it's a hardware or setting issue - it's channel specific, which means it's most likely a Bell issue. One oddity - I've got two TVs hooked up to a 9242 and for awhile was getting normal sound on TV2 (connected via coax), but not on TV1 (connected via component video) when connected to the same channel at the same time.
 
I think you are correct. I tried to reverse the receivers and put my 3100 on the LCD tv and it puts out the same low sound quality on certain channels. Must be a Bell thing we have to live with. Or until I get a surround system.
