Low GPA and resume help for future art student?

First of all, my GPA is 2.7 and I am a senior in high school. I will begin applying to colleges in a few months. My freshman (especially) and sophomore grades aren't very good, so that's what is making my GPA so low. However, my junior year grades are all A's and B's with honors and AP classes. My SAT scores are pretty good too, but my GPA is worrying me. I'm only applying to art schools (and if not at a complete "art school" I'm applying for an art major). Will I be able to get into schools in this situation? My portfolio is not a worry for me.

I have not participated in any extracurricular activities aside from the art club at my school, so I am looking for some community service or anything art-related that I can put on my resume as well. Any ideas?

Much appreciated for anyone who helps.

Since your only activity is art club, rather than throwing random things on there at this late date, I'd rather you expand on that interest. Maybe, for example, run a fundraiser for the club, or organize an art show. Maybe submit work to the region's art show. Maybe volunteer to paint sets for the drama club. All that would be a natural progression from what you're already doing, and would make logical sense to admissions.

If you're applying to pure art schools, your GPA will be fine. The fact that you improved over time is in your favor, the SATs are in your favor, and of #1 importance, it's your portfolio that's going to help you out here. If your portfolio is strong enough, even the best art schools will let you in.

As for applying to a broad uni as an art major - the impact of your GPA will vary, depending on what uni we're talking about. But again, your portfolio is important, and your upward trend in grades will help.

I wanted to mention the Cooper Union to you, in case you don't know about it. It's in NYC, it's an elite art school, and if you get in, it's tuition free.

Art colleges and art programs within universities focus on your portfolio. A 2.7 is not great, but its not that bad. Most colleges and universities require that you have a gpa of at least 2.0. Frankly art colleges and programs focus on the portfolio. Once you get in just focus on making As and Bs and you'll have a better gpa. If you had a job, you can put that down, but I wouldn't worry so much about your gpa or the extracurricular activities.
