I live with lower back pain and I experience from time to time left side only, I get what I think is hip pain. Can low back problems go to the hip on one side only?

Hi all,
In my case, post PLIF, I'm having SI pain presumably from musculo-skeletal issues from the fused L4-5 (sporadic also). Since my fused joint is only one joint up from the sacral area, it makes sense that if my movements are out of kilter, it's going to put added stress on the sacro-iliac joint.

Standing man put it very well - it can be SOO many things. I just think I know the pain youre talking about... the bone pain. Coincidentally, that's also close by the area where they took my bone for the grafts on my fusion.. So... I'm sure it's all connected in my case.

Get a doctors opinion, for sure. Isn't it amazing how complex our bodies can be???

Hugs to you,
susan

PLIF August 1, 2003 from a car accident August 6, 1998 (long journey, long story)

In 1999 I had an MRI that showed Pelvic arthritis. (OA) as well as bulgeing of the Lurabar spine. I had pain ONLY in the right side of my lower back area right along the top of my hip. The pain was sporatic but at that time I did not have much arthritis yet. The pelvic bone is actually the "tail bone" part of your spine, not your hip.

LOL..well Singer, I guess my discription is sort of lame..but I just didn't know how else to describe it.
Standingman1 said it really nice.

Hope you fell better soon.

I've had a CT scan of the pelvic area. Would that show any arthritis? I feel some pain on the bone itself, is that where you felt your pain? Did it feel like it was in the ovary region? I just can't tell.

Hi, I think I know what you are going thru, Nov 2001, I had L4-5 hemilaminectomy and discectomy, Nov 2 to be exact, Nov 12, 2001, the very same discs had reruptured and I found out that I also have an annular and radial tear. BUT neither of these address the pain in my hip. On equack told me there was nothing to go wrong there. One doctor told me it was because the nerve was so badly damaged it was causing sympathy pain. NOT. The pain I have is directly in the sacro-iliac joint, so painful I don not sleep at night, no position helps, sex kills it, standing is horrifying, sitting is worse. The real problem is the doctor will only prescribe Ibuprofen because he says, "I don't want yo to do something to further damage your back". Yea right. I'm ready to strangle something. I feel for you, I do think I know what you are talking about. But since mine has been going on since a horseback "wreck" accident in 1988, there's no telling.
Anyway the best of luck to ya, I hope you live close enough to some real doctors.

I never had an ovary region in my back. you mean a female pain..no it's not like that at all.
It's on the bone area only. JUST on the bone. Where you bend when you touch your toes. Put your hand exactly on the bone at top of your rear end below your waist in the back and thats where I felt the arthritis.
I've never had a CT scan. I've had X-rays and MRI's.
My OA has progressed a long way from my pelvic area now but of course it's still in the pelvic area too..
Your lower spine is the Pelvic and Lurabar areas. Pelvic is the tail bone (so to speak) the very lowest area and the lurabar is just above that.

Jacksnana, you might want to investigate the Peripherial Neuropathy board. Damaged nerves are very painful on their own, not in sympathy!

I would suggest going to see an Osteopath or Chiropractor. The exact area and pain distribution no matter how well described is impossible to diagnose online - for any practitioner - no matter how experienced.
Low Back Pain is very common and usually quite easily sorted by reputable practitioners, even disc injuries - remeraber the body wants to heal itself - don't stay in pain - get it sorted.

As I'm reading this, it seems like a lot of different things can be called "hip pain"--pain in the sacrum (tailbone), general pelvic area pain, pain in the hip itself (the part that juts out; the "wings" of the pelvis), or pain in the hip joint, closer to where the trochanter (the "bump" at the top of the leg bone) juts out or in the leg crease/groin area.

There are lots of possible connections between back pain and all the above, including upper luraber disk problems; SI joint dysfunctions; psoas muscle problems; certain versions of sciatica that can be felt in the hip; and many more. Of course, also possible to have an inedpendent hip problem or a hip problem secondary to compensation in response to a back problem or a back problem secondary to compensating for a primary hip problem!!

So it's complicated, but there can definitely be connections. The best physical medicine doc you can find may be the specialist most able to help sort it out.

Good luck,

Standingman
