I have been in extreme agony for 5 weeks, mostly in my right outer thigh and sometimes in the inner thigh and right low back. I can't sit, I have to be mostly lying down or standing. I have had every test imaginable so far, MRI, CT scan, x-rays, bone scan, and PET/CT scan because I have a history of breast cancer. The bone scan had showed some small spot near L4 pedicle but the PET scan was negative for metastatic disease. My next step is a nerve conduction test in a couple of days. I am relieved about the cancer, but I need to find out what is causing this crazy pain that even pain killers barely touch. Anyone out there with similar symptoms?

Hi,

Of course I cannot say what is causing your pain, but I have had very similar symptoms. Mine, though, were all seen on MRI and were caused by spinal stenosis and sciatica. I really hope the nerve conduction test will give you some answers.

Hi
i had similar symptoms aswell and it was due to sciatica also, the pain was unbearable and i ended up undergoing a second spinal surgery and am still recovering, what did the mri results say in relation to your lurabar spine and discs? I never had a nerve conduction test and kind of hope they can be done in Ireland as im still suffering with nerve pain in my left thigh, will you let me know how you get on, id be very interested in hearing about it

It may also be your piriformis, especially if nothing's coming up on MRIs.

If you place your thurab on the greater trochanter (hip bone/top of femur), and feel a dull ache or sharp pain, then it's most likely the piriformis.

If that's it, then go online for stretches you can do. Also, try lying flat on your back & place a tennis ball under each buttock. Roll them around to find the area most painful/sensitive for some time, then roll along the line from your hipbone to your lower back.

Good luck & keep us posted as to the results/your progress.

I have been suffering from pain identical to yours for 5 years now. But like Rampage said, I would do some research on Piriformis Syndrome, that's what I have concluded I have since I too, have had every test under the sun. My PT and I were sure it was herniated discs but that came back negative.

Rampage -- do you think this could still be piriformis if stretching does not help at all? I have religiously done piriformis and SI stretches and was instructed properly through physical therapy for over a year. The stretching did not help at all and was usually impossible to do anyways due to my pain level.

Even though little has helped I have had some relief by using an SI belt -- so I recommend looking for a good one. Insurance could even cover the cost. I also have a tens unit and something called a sacrowedgy that have all helped in a small way. Good luck!

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. The nerve conduction and EMG were done a couple of weeks ago and it was TORTURE, especially after being told nothing was wrong. I know it has to do with a nerve! Anyhow, I have since had 3 of my other doctors, who are not specialists for this, tell me it sounded like lateral femoral nerve syndrome. However, I don't fit the profile of being obese or having had a hyserectomy or hernia. I have had 3 more shots in my back, L2/L3, L3/L4 and a selective nerve block, which seem to have helped a bit. Yesterday, I had a femoral nerve block, but it is to soon to know if this did the job. Will try to remeraber to keep posting.

Hi just a thought could be that U have gone in to overload because of the feelings and thoughts re the fear of cancer again.
The ligaments that run down the spine to the thigh muscles may have gone into overdrive and need to untighten and the back pain may be a slight degeneration to this L4 level but it sounRAB very mild if I understood your post well enough
let me know what U think ? cheers Judi
