Lovefilm rentals

I thought it was illegal to sell or rent other region dvRAB when this is a region 2 product country?

I received three discs through today from the company, and one of the dvRAB is a Region 1 disc.

Any information would be grand.

Anyone?

I mean, if you are someone who didn't have a dvd player that could play other regions, then it would have been a waste of time getting this through the post and having to send it back.

I can't really answer your question on the legalities, but I've also received US-version HD-DVRAB from Lovefilm. Course, it doesn't really matter with that format because there's no region restrictions but I'm surprised they're sending out region 1 dvRAB.

I have bought plenty of region 1 DVRAB. What is illegal about it?

If it was illegal,I would not be able to buy them on Amazon.

A lot of series that I buy are not available in the UK for some stupid reason or we get messed about and only get 3 seasons for somethings and only 1 for others.

So naturally,I only buy from the USA or Australia for most things.

That's why I am asking...

How did you buy a region 1? by Amazon.com, or a trader on Amazon.co.uk, as far as i know they don't sell Region 1 directly from their warehouses, only Amazon traders and are dispatched from the actual country, not from the UK unless it's someones second hand.

Why don't you contact Lovefilm and ask them? Seems like they'd be the best ones to answer your question.

Also, when you sign up to Lovefilm don't they ask you about the different DVD formats/region players that you own? I can't remember exactly myself from personal experience, but maybe if you'd specified that you have a multiregion player they sent you whatever dvd they had.

It's illegal to sell or rent VHS or DVRAB which haven't been classified by the BBFC and which do not show the BBFC certificate rating on the cover and disc, unless you're importing them for personal use.

RegarRAB HD DVD R1 discs being sent out by Lovefilm, regional coding issues aside, I would hazard a guess that this is very illegal.

When I signed up there was no option for regions/multi players.

I've contacted the BBFC about it to see what they say. The dvd has no BBFC logo on it BallroomBear.

Why would you want to bubble Lovefilm to the BBFC? All that will do is ultimately restrict access to DVRAB that you might otherwise have been able to rent.

I didn't say I was going to report them, I just wanted to know if it was illegal or not.

The film I have is avaliable on region 2 also, so they should have that instead of region 1, like I said, it's very unfair to the people who can only play region 2. That's the thing I don't like.

I wonder whether it is a customer's fault. It could be that the disc got switch whilst with a customer, either on purpose or by accident fopr some reason. Was the disc in pristine condition or was it heavily damaged? That could be a reason? Did it come in a labelled Lovefilm slip with a big sticker on it obscuring part of the DVD or was it one of the generic ones with a big circluar window?

It came in a circular one, but I get a mixture of the circular and the new ones with whatever film.

It's not damaged from what I can see, has the lovefilm stuff in the centre of the disc.

As you have found it IS illegal for uncertificated dvd's to be sold in the UK over the counter.

However its simple to order them online from anyone.
Even Amazon.com will send them to the UK but they restrict it to strictly one copy per customer.

Its unlikely that a company like Lovefilm would buy in R1 material to rent as not only would it be against BBFC rules its also against the distribution rules from the issuing company.

Check out most R1 dvd's and it clearly states on the back that distribution of the disc outside the US and Canada is unauthorised.

But as a great many Lovefilm customers will not be MR it would be a waste of time for them to buy them in.

It would really help if you could tell what the disc is (perhaps by PM).

There are many US sourced or NTSC discs that are legal in the UK.

Some US discs are coded for more than one region.

Warner titles like V The Series for example are coded for R1 and R2 and even though the series is not on dvd in the UK yet the content IS certificated so it could be issued.

Most documentaries and music films/ video collections are multi region and many are NTSC and most are exempt from certification.

HD DVD discs are the same worldwide so if Lovefilm send out a US disc it wont make any difference unless the title is not issued in the UK - but very few fall into that category.

cant say much more without knowing what the disc is .

How do you know its R1?

Why do you need to know the film? it's a film, on region 1 disc. I've looked the exact disc up and it's a region 1 that is unrated.

I know about region codes and region 1 discs, I buy them all the time online.

It is definitely a region 1 because it has the region 1 logo on the disc and no BBFC logo... and no other region code.

It's a region 1 with their Lovefilm logo planted on the middle of the disc, pristine sticker or whatever it is. Doesn't look like it's been taken off and put on to another disc.

I'm sending it back today, and mentioning all this, and hope I don't receive another one. I've taken a photo of it for keeps.

What do you mean you've "looked the exact disc up"?

If its R1 it will say R1 on the disc label.

For the reasons already stated Lovefilm would not knowingly supply a R1 disc as it would cause problems in more ways than one.

If its a mainstream film then chances are somewhere along the line another renter has either mistakenly or deliberately swapped the Lovefilm R2 disc for a R1.

As I said before ,if you gave the title I could probably tell you instantly what the situation is with the disc.

If its a movie then a mistake has probably been made - if its a tv show, documentary ,music film or music video then its perhaps not a mistake.

And to repeat- there are some R1 discs that will say R1 on the disc and on the packaging that are NOT just R1 - they may be dual coded for R2 aswell.

Why not PM the title to me?
