Love Story (1970) - thoughts?

This seems to be a love or hate when it comes to this classic movie. How do you feel about it?

I love it, but in a guilty pleasure kind of way. I always wonder just what Jenny sees in Oliver. She's spunky and outgoing, he's a wet mop. It also amuses me that
Ali MacGraw grew more beautiful the closer she came to death, but that's Hollywood for you - the same thing happened with Merle Oberon in Wuthering Heights.

But regardless, the hopeless romantic in me enjoys this film. I just can't help myself.

It did nothing for me I'm afraid, though the death scene did cause a lump in my throat.
Boy, it was melodramatic and so corny :D

"Love means never having to say you're sorry."

I bought this DVD on sale in HMV, expecting an epic romance. I thought it was absolute rubbish. Ali McGraws character was just a pain in the butt. I didn't like her at all, but I thought he was really good looking.
I think it's just ridiculously outdated, maybe when it was made she was seen as being really rebellious and feminist or something, but I couldn't relate to her at all, she just seemed dull. I didn't even cry. Very disappointing, though I do like the music score, very 70s.

I think this is one of those movies that could actually be better if remade. The original looks so dated it's a distraction - a negative one, imho. I didn't actually like the music though. Find it too loud, and too frequent. It feels intrusive more than anything, to me.

But like I said, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I don't know what it is but I enjoy it on some levels, enough to own a copy on DVD.
