Loud or Loudly?

Which do I use in this sentence?

A laugh starts out loud and becomes quieter, likely because the person laughing runs out of breath.
 
Loud because loudly would mean that the way the person starts out is loudly instead of the person starts being loud.
 
Loud, because it's an adjective. Loudly is a verb and the verb in that sentence is laughing. Loud is the adjective to describe the laughing.
