Lots of white smoke coming from my Ford Mondeo exhaust. Why?

Even after a 24 mile journey to work lots of smoke still comes from the exhaust. I also notice that the car heater becomes cool after a while. Is this connected?
 
Sounds like a blown head gasket or cracked block allowing coolant into the combustion chamber.
It will affect your heater also if the coolant gets low. Check it.
