LOTR - Video Running Times

We borrowed the first Lord of the Rings film from a friend and watched it the other day.

The film was very good indeed, but I have a question about the running time quoted on the box. That gave a running time of 171 minutes.

However it actually ran for only 161 minutes. Checked it again on fast forward and rewind and the result was the same.

Anyone know why this should happen? Is it just a mistake? Or are the running times always inaccurate?

It should say '171 minutes (approx)'. I think NTSC is 4% faster than PAL, so the time may be quoting the NTSC time, as Exulus has said.

Stuff here about NTSC and PAL.

The extended version contains about 30 minutes of extra footage.
Stuff that goes a long way to enhance the characters of the movie.

That's very odd! Maybe there is something up with your video timer.

My DVD player reports the film time (up to the fade out as Frodo and Sam walk down the slope) as 2hrs 43mins 25 secs, i.e. 163 mins 25 secs, which fits with what I remember from seeing it in the cinema -- the total film length including credits (and if you think these are lengthy, wait until you see those on the extended edition, where the names of all the charter members of the fanclub are listed for around 10 extra minutes!) is 2hrs 50mins 46secs, i.e. 170 mins 46 secs.... :)

And (at least what seems like) half an hour added on to the cresits to list fan club members. Must try to remember to cut that out if I do a divx transfer at any stage
