Lot of smoke from car exhaust!?

I just bought, about a month ago, a used BMW 120d (diesel) automatic with about 82k on the clock. Of recent (just a few days ago), I started noticing a lot of smoke emitting from the exhaust, especially when accelerating or idling in traffic. Any idea what could be the cause of this? Everything else with the car is fine, i.e. no strange noise etc. Thanks

Not unusual for these to blow a load of smoke out when you put your foot down hard at lower revs. never seen it at tickover though. That could mean the turbo is about to fail or could be paranoia on your part and has been steam from the exhaust in the recent colder mornings

check your air filter, make sure its not clogged up and making your car use more fuel than air
