Lost In Translation

What an awful summerising of the film...

its like saying

Oh I didn't like the Godfather it was about this dad and his gangster family...

or

Star Wars was poo... Its about this guy who has to save a princess

or

Shawshank Redemption... ah its just a prison movie...

It obviously was too heavy for you, as its about the emotions of being cut adrift from the people you love and finding solice in an unlikely place... One being towed around Japan by her unattentive husband, and one whose a failing A list actor making money in advertising and feels unloved and forlone.

Its two people who don't find love persay, but they find a deep and loving relationship from being alone in Japan without anyone to turn to.

If understanding a film to any form of depth makes me more superior, then I must be.
 
No your just deluded.

The films meant to be a comedy drama.. I didnt laugh once.

I feel sorry for you as your a sucker for publicity and a sheep that follows the crowd with no thought processes of your own.
 
Well, my personal opinion is that I absolutely loved it, and it's quite rare for me to REALLY like a hyped up film. (I didn't like Titanic, Lord of the Rings and about any other hyped up film of the last few years).
But Lost in Translation is a great film, I would even go as far as saying it's my favourite film of all times. It was refreshingly different and not one of those stereotypical Hollywood romances.
I suppose it only appeals to people who can relate to the characters. People who cannot will hate it. But then everyone's different (I, for instance, cannot relate to anything in Men in Black or Lord of the Rings, so there you go!) :D
 
Lost in translation is a pretty good movie, but hardly the "Masterpiece" it's being hailed as; if there is such a thing.It's certainly worth a viewing though, if only for Bill Murrays Performance. And as for Shawshank Redemption,yes it's a good film but not as good as it believes itself to be.And telling someone that they just don't understand a film, if they say they think it's crap, just isn't good enough. They is nothing short of bullying tactics..
 
weren't you mesmerised by the subtle yet compulsive relationship that developed by the two main protagonists, immersed into the disorientating feel of urban japan, or seduced by the beautifully haunting music draped over the whole film?

This movie is completely overrated. Just like in Godfather three Copolla gets the hype and fails to impress. Without doubt Murray and Johanson's performance are excellent and they carry what otherwise would have been a terrible film. There is just so little progression during the course of the film, it plays upon some emotions but doesn't go anywhere with them and in effect you're in the same place you were at the start of the movie. If I could choose a different title for the film it would be The Emperor's New Clothes as I have met no-one that can explain to me (without resorting to name-calling, looking down on me or trying to make some aloof statement) why this film is any good. Sofia is Hollywood royalty and gets the right up as such, if she had taken a note from Nicholas Cage and changed the name there wouldn't be the same hype about it. That said I hope to see Murray win best oscar for his performance (All the way through the flick I kept thinking 'My god he was in Ghostbusters')
 
Well don't get my wrong I believe you and I are in agreement that it is slightly, over hyped. I don't see anything timeless here. It's just a fairly good pathology of the lonely and the misguided.But why is it good?in short: it contains characters with a bit a bit a depth that are acted out with high degree of competence, a narrative that is well structured and compliments the characters and the pace, without patronising the viewer and some fairly good cinematography with for the most part a good sense of technical direction. I think that the film works, but only just. Which I believe justifies it as a "good" film, not amazing.
I can't speak for you, but I saw this movie before critics and other people got their teeth into it, which is maybe one of the reasons I could enjoy it better.If my answer is still too vague, then I could be wrong.But I think that your opinion comes down to just that.Your opinion, and not a logical, un-biased assessment of the film.
 
Ooooh! I'd be careful here dfgh; we that cast a critical eye over film in this forum often get shot down in flames of '...but it was absolute puttybutter' or '...but it just rocks!!!' (delete as applicable).

I have yet to see the film and to be honest I'm sure that I'll take my time about it. Hype does effect the way in which I see a film, so where possible I try to avoid it (unless someone is really desparate to see it with me).

i just really enjoyed it - i know not much happens really, but thought the whole thing was really very beautiful and understated, well acted, well written, and with a very effeftive soundtrack.

Well, as I've wanted to see this film since Spring 2003 when I first heard about it. This was BEFORE any hype was written about it both in America and here. You can't tell me that I am a hype-junky... I don't read reviews of films that I want to watch (except if they are on Film 2004 or Talking Movies...) and I definitely don't just watch films because they are regarded as "brilliant". The English Patient being one of the biggest pieces of drivvle EVER. Titanic another...

I watched this film and thought it to be a very beautiful well told story.

I'm not a sheep that follows the crowd at all. If you look at my film collection, it will show you several films that have been critically derailed... The Shawshank Redemption is a perfect example of this. The Taking of Pelham 123, one of my favourite movies, is not regarded very highly at all.

The film was well written, and is visually lovely. It is a great piece of comedy. Bill Murray plays his part wonderfully, showing that hes not just one of the greatest American comedic-actors of all time, but he can also play a role fantastically straight... and also showing us that Scarlett Johansson is actually a very good actress, even after being seriously poor in GhostWorld.

Every person in this film pulls out excellent performances. Even Anna Farris in her sub Britney Spears parody role.

I'm sorry I don't think Armageddon is the best film ever. I am also sorry that I will not instantly shun a film if people like it. I don't go out my way to dislike what everyone else likes, but visa versa I won't go out my way to like what everyone else dislikes! Which is what I am seeing here.
 
I've just seen the film and I agree it is the best film I've seen in ages. I think the film could suffer from the bandwagonesque media love-in. It is definitely not a rom-com and is a heavy film that not everyone will appreciate.
 
I don't see Nicholas Cage ever being harmed by being in the Copolla family.. Do you? And he is another overhyped actor, Good yes, but definitely over hyped. He's only ever pulled off two good performances really. One of those in another critically mauled movie.

Didn't say he was harmed but it was a good point for him to disassociate himself somewhat. We're being faced with family legacies popping up in Hollwood, for example Ron HowarRAB daughter is soon to appear on our screens. By at least using a different surname it doesn't make people think you got the job because of mommy or daddy rather than your talent.

The Ghostbusters jib was a joke, I kept picturing him doing the duck walk or whatever its called.
 
I really I enjoyed this film, but I can understand why some people wouldn't. The trailer has 'that bloke with the voice' doing the usual:

"Two people... alone... in a city.... in the Must See Film of the year..... Bill Murray... Scarlett Johansson.... the aclaimed director of the Virgin Suicides..... invite you to spend two hours in Japan..... nominated for 8 billion academey awarRAB.... this years most romantic film...... Lost In Translation"

So clearly some people go along and see the film expecting it to be something that it isn't. If you'd seen the Virgin Suicides, you'd know what kind of films Sofia Coppola makes - and they're not rom-coms. They're very much visual and slow sort of films - perhaps some would describe them as intelectual.

Personally I went and saw this film with an open mind. I hadn't seen the trailer, or read a review, but knew that it starred Bill Murray and wasn't going to be your average hollywood blockbuster.

I couldn't really tell you why I liked this film, I just did. But that's me and so I wouldn't expect everyone to feel the same. The world would be very boring if we all did.
 
are you kidding? its a classic :)

looking forward to *lost in translation* - although i don't know too much about it, or exactly what to expect - which is always good. but from reading here *punch drunk love* springs to mind - similarly a straightforward love story, with *arthouse* tones. i was quite surprised at how, well *quirky* i suppose PDL was, and as a result didn't quite enjoy it as much as i thought i would.
