Lost In Translation

What a beautiful, amazing piece of film making...
Sofia Copolla has now made 2 out of 2 for me. Both of her movies to date have been nothing short of fantastic...

Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray both played their characters brilliantly... and really have seemed to confuse the world over what their relationship is about... What a great film.

I've seen this film twice now-i think it is so beautiful-i'm a big Bill Murray fan anyway but I think this is amazing-an instant favourite-with a kick ass soundtrack too :)

I enjoyed "The Virgin Suicides" too

I was very sceptical before when i heard about this movie because as some of you know, im not a huge arty-film fan, infact i would go as far yo say im very anti art film fan! Simply because the only thing i think art films try and do is prove itself to be worthy of something...........when infact art films turn out to be a desperate atempt to shock and bore you out of your skull !

However Lost in Translation is an art film that doesnt try and be art or mainstream..........its just a film telling a very simple story, and thats what i call cinema!

I believe Lost in Translation is one of the best romantic comedys probably of the last 21st and 20th century. Yes i know thats slightly OTT but the reason why i say this is because, its not overly sentimental and smushy, infact its depicts love almost perfectly in a real way.............Something Richard Curtis neeRAB to note and practice:rolleyes: .

One of the best films this year........in my list with LOTR:ROTK

;1652768']I saw the trailer for this on Saturday night and I must admit, it looks quite good. Probably not one I'd see at the pictures, but definitely worth looking out for on Sky Movies in a couple of years.

have just been to see *lost in translation* and loved it.

as has been said, just a beautifully told and simple little story.

yes, it was slow at the start, but it was a beautifully evocative piece of cinema, perfectly capturing the loneliness, disorientation, and mundanity of a westerners experience in Japan.

god i'm full of crap sometimes :D

but I loved the jesus & mary chain at the end!

As above except you can replace the word 'loved' with 'liked it a lot' and take out that bit about it being 'slow at the start'. I think people should give Copolla some more credit - it's hard to create an atmosphere of isolation in such a closely built city. Those high ceilings in the hotel were a nice touch in helping to create that sense of loneliness ;)

If I was to complain about anything then it'd have to be Bill Murray, as he once again plays the role of ... that's right - Bill Murray. I am at a loss as to why people feel he was particularly good in this movie

I'm also a little confused here - It's by no means a rom-com and I honestly can't understand why people think it is meant to be? Perhaps it was the way it was 'sold' to you by other media types - I really couldn't say! And yes, nothing 'happens' in the film but then, so what? I found that to be part of its awkward charm!Nothing happened in 'Withnail & I' either!

I was being a smart arse.

Shucks, is there no appreciation for subtley in this godforsaken place. :D

Another film I still haven't seen. This, American Splendor and Big Fish were the three I was waiting for. So far, none out of three.

Anyone seen American Splendor yet? I can't wait to see how they handle Robert Crumb.

don't get me wrong - i realise it was slow by necessity - to create the contemplative, reflective mood of the setting, and subsequently used to great effect, the way in which their night out was full of life in comparison.

he wasn't thatBill Murrayish i didn't think - thought he was quite restrained, and wasn't full of his usual overegged, tho' still usually quite likable, comic noRAB and winks.

i know - it was a refreshing change - i do really like films like this, where its more just a window into ordinary things happening in ordinary people lives.

I was sure I'd seen him act virtually the same way before - and then it hit me! Rushmore! Quickly dragged out the old VHS and blew off the cobwebs and gave it a quick watch. There are some very obvious similarities.

OK, he was never going to be too zany with the script, but he acted in the same format he has done so for the past twenty years, just without the loud 'n' brash jokes... It never seems like a 'transformation' with Murray, unlike some other actors that mould themselves into a roll - not that it's a requirement of great acting, of course!
The point is that it just seems that everyone is saying that Murray was sooo different in this film, whereby I feel that it isn't anything that he hasn't done many, many times before.
