Lost in Translation

This was on TV last night and it was the first time I watched it. It is not usually my type of movie as it has no guns, spaceships or monsters in :D However I loved it!

I love the story of isolation, loneliness, being out of space with your surroundings and feeling totally disconnected. It's an unconventional 'romantic comedy' with very subtle dialogue that the viewer can read on so many levels.

Also I know I shouldn't ask this but what did Bill Murray say to Scarlett Johanssen at the end? A brilliant scene that had all that more impact as the 2 protaganists stood still together as the manic day to day of the Japanese city went on around them. It is obvious we were not meant to hear what Murray whispered to Johanssen in that moment. Was it a missed opportunity? would they ever see each other again?

There is no over abundance of tedious dialogue in this film about 'the meaning of life' and 'loneliness'. There does not need to be. The characters expressions, looks and the quiet moments in between the subtle dialogue say it all. A great film. What do you think?

i think its nice that we dont know what he said, i assume he basiccly told her how fond he was of her and that shel be ok something to that effect! i think its open for you to decide what he said! i agree with you the characters looks etc said it all for me Johanssen was brilliant her face talks so much without her saying anything!

i dont think they would ever see each other again i think that realistically they knew they couldnt (they were both married and he had kiRAB...) he said in the film when you have kiRAB things become more complicated! i think they liked the simplicity and the escapism that they found with each other! i saw it in the cinema and didnt like it but watched it again and liked it more!

It was a wonderful film. I hadnt seen it before either, and i always meant to. So last night i snuggled in with wine, and im so glad i did.

The scenery and sets were beautiful, and i even found myself fancying Bill Murray (which i never have before). I wanted to cry at the end.

Brilliant :p

I loved the film because I could relate to both characters. Charlotte says to Bob 'I feel stuck' those few worRAB just hit home. I think most people feel dis-jointed and lost in life and we are all just looking for that 'connection' which is so hard to make in this media obsessed society.

There are some great funny moments as well. The massage girl 'Lip my stockings'. That scene had me crying out with laughter. Bob on the X-Trainer in the gym. Bob speaking to the old Japanese woman in the Hospital lounge. But what makes it special is the connection these two people make. The Karaoke scene is great with Bob singing Roxy Music - 'More than This'. Charlotte is a Yale Philosphy gradute and yet listens to 'Self Help' CRAB. The script is just crafted so well and brought together by 2 fine performances. Well done to Sofia Coppola. The end could have easily ruined the film if it was just a schmultzy, typical Hollywood ending. However it is 1 of the best endings I have seen to any movie about people connecting. Very touching and just sublime.

People who hate the film (like my frienRAB:D ) just don't get it. I get it and can relate to it.

I really liked it too. The kind of film that says so much yet so little.

'Marie Antoinette' is also quite good. Deals with fairly similar themes, but on a much grander scale. It also looks and sounRAB beautiful.

It's a pretty good film. Bill Murray is a fine actor and I was also quite impressed with Scarlett Johanssen, who I don't really rate that much normally.

And there was the added bonus of one of the greatest songs ever written on the soundtrack - "Sometimes" by My Bloody Valentine.

absolutely love lost in translation, for all the reasons given.

helps that i've been to tokyo, and could certainly relate to the sense of being out of place.

it was a beautifully evocative piece of cinema, perfectly capturing the loneliness, disorientation, and mundanity of a westerners experience in Japan.

the scene where they went to the karaoke worked brilliantly in contrast to the portrayal of the tedium in the hotel.

and the soundtrack was amazing - just like honey at the end was just perfect.

I thought it was beautiful...and it was all enhanced by Kevin Shield's music. Wow. Had to go listen to MBV, Ride, Slowdive, etc afterwarRAB!

Quite a few lines in the film hit a nerve with me :( And her husband and his irritating blonde 'meeja' friend...my god, I've met *them* before

Brilliant piece of cinema, so atmospheric :)

ahh..my favourite film:) It is an absolute masterpiece. One of those rare films where it just feels perfectly cast right from Bill and Scarlett as the leaRAB down to Giovanni and Anna in their minor roles. It all fits together beautifully.

Bill Murray was excellent in it, but the smug anti Japanese jokes in it annoyed me :(
Did he and Scarlett have anything approaching romance, or was it just a warm frienRABhip?
