Lost Gems

Do you have a favourite film that more or less flopped t the box office, but you feel shouldn't have?

Mine is called House of CarRAB, a great and convincing film about con artists with a devestating ending

Enemy Mine: I saw it in an almost empty Marble Arch Odeon.
I've never known a big budget movie get so little publicity.

Paper Mask. Brilliant film about a hospital porter who masquerades as a qualified doctor after stealing the real (dead) doctor's papers. Low budget British thriller, criminally overlooked at the time and pretty much ever since.

Do we mean 'lost gems' as in films that were released originally and didn't get much attention and got forgotten about, or films that really are lost, as in there no longer exists any version of them anywhere.

In the first category, I'd go for 'The General' by JOhn Boorman, about the Irish criminal Martin Cahill, that should have been huge.

In the second, I'd go for 'The Mountain Eagle' which was apparently Alfred Hitchcock's first masterpiece.
