That is very interesting. A hernia means it has gone through the wall. And how do they know it hasnt gone through the wall. I would seriously get a 2nd opinion. Do you have nausea or vomiting, or abdominal pain? If you do, you need to get to the ER ok? Read up on the femoral hernia on the web too. The website I read said a femoral hernia should be felt and not really tests needed to confirm. I would see a surgeon who knows what they are doing and removes it before it strangulates. Why wait until it does? Thats durab in my opinion.
Does that seem to be where the pain is coming from?
Jen

I agree with Jen. I think you should see another general surgeon for his opinion. Maybe you can ask him to order a ct scan of that area if he isn't sure what the knot is. I don't understand why everyone is shrugging this off and taking a wait and see attitude. Wait for what? For you to be doubled over in pain and rushed into emergency surgery? Outrageous and silly.

Carol

Hi Reyne, I agree with the others, see if you can get another opinion, something just doesn't seem right, and seeing a surgeon every two months for a hernia, I always thought if you have a hernia it gets repaired, do some research on the net, and go with your gut instinct.
Good luck, keep us posted.

OMG...thanks for all you replies. I have been to 2 general surgeons. I also went to the University of IA to see a hernia specialist..that was terrible. He felt the lump said hernia's do not hurt and my left is different from my right side dah...what is the burab them?? He could not explain and went on to question me about my marriage?? I told him if I had problems in my marriage I would be a MARRIAGE counsler not wasting my day with you!!

The lump is hard in my groin. I have been to 2 gyno's and one who did laporscopic on my pelvis...says it is a femoral hernia and both sent me to a general surgeons. Both surgeons said they would not do anything till it pretty much was and emergency. From the reading I have done when it gets to that point it is urgent...life or death urgent.

I have a call into my pain doc to get into the Mayo. The nurse told me I could not get in till March of next year...joy.

All I want to know is what is wrong with me!! Is it my back causing groin pain and a bump or is the other way around and how the he$$ do I make it all stop..gotta go I am gonna cry!!:(

I finally got into see a spine specialist today. I am just trying to figure out what is causing this hard knot in my groin.

He has no idea it could be a femoral hernia and I need to see a general surgeon every 2 months till whatever happens. Some Dr's say it is because of my back, some say lymph nodes some say I have no idea you better find out.

He also thought I should not have any pain because my MRI show a slight bulge in L5. My other Dr's say bulge in L4, L5 and S1 deffering pain to the groin.

I had the RF done L4, L5..did not work relieved some pain though. Just lost I want answers. I left message with my Pain Doc I think I better go to the Mayo Clinic. Not sure what to do anymore?? I just want answers and reason why I am in pain...that must be too much to ask!

I am sort of at a loss here as to what all is going on, but I wanted to say this ....
One tim

One time I got a knot in my groin. It was sore, and it kept getting bigger so I went to the Dr. I HAD VAGINITIS/Yeast Inf.

I had no earthly idea that I had any kind of infection. I was not itching, hurting, discharge or anything like that. So, I was blown out of the water when he told me that. He gave me meRAB ( I forget what) and it took care of the problem. If I am wayyyyy off base here, sorry......I just noticed the knot in the groin area and remerabered what mine was. Have they done a pap on you lately? I am grasping at straws here.....Hope you can find the problem soon. I know it is very irritating to have a problem and not find the root of it.

Talk to ya later, Mammy

Good for you, your marriage is none of that surgeons business. I have always hated when docs have tried to turn my pain into an emotional pain rather than physical. It is so hard to say whether your pain is from hernia or your back, but wouldnt you rather have surgery to remove the hernia to see if its back pain rather than have back surgery and realize its your hernia? It does not hurt to rule this out first.

I spent over a year and two abdominal surgeries to rule out any sort of pain rather than back pain. I was willing to try everything before I settled for the back surgery.

I know it is frustrating. Maybe you need a different type of surgeon who is more understanding to your situation. Are these both general surgeons who have said these things to you? Maybe you could discuss this with your ob/gyn who found it and tell her the reaction you got from both surgeons. Maybe she/he knows someone who will help you.

The other idea is to go in to your next two month appt with the general surgeon and just say look, there is pain, and I am tired of living with the pain, can you please remove the hernia? I know with insurances there are rules on these types of procedures as far as when a surgeon can intervene, and not sure what they are on hernias. Know in the back of your mind that if the pain gets unbearable to get to the ER.

Take Care!

Jen-
If you do not mind me asking..what surgery did you have on your stomach??

Sometimes I think Dr's anymore are just tooo "specialized"..just my opinion. They have a Dr for everything little thing anymore and they do not look at the whole picture. Most of the Dr's seem to pawn me off on other Dr's and then when I demand some answers from them...they say I truely do not know. You need to go to a university type clinic or pawn me off on a general surgeon. The few surgeons I have seen are always in a rush, in and out and I have had to wait more that 3 hrs for a few of them.

Most of the time on Dr's appt's I make my hubby go. Then he can stand up for me that it is not mental. Yah..the marriage question from that Dr about sent me on a rage. I know that some stress, people in our lives can bring on pain in different forms. But I waited a month to see this guy and drove 3 hrs and he charged my insurance company $350 bucks..that makes me mad.

Luckly I have great health insurance that covers any hernia or most types of treatments.

Hi!
This year, I had a laporoscopy and appendectomy to rule out appendecitis for back pain/mild chronic fever, and also to rule out any endometriosis or abdominal problem that could be referring my pain to my back. I have had a c section in the past and last year they did a partial hysterectomy to rule out my uterus causing the back pain. Now that I look back on it, I had a lot of things removed for no good reason, but in my mind I did it to avoid surgery to my back. I have no reproductive parts left, and am on estrogen permanently now. Then I ended up doing surgery for my back anyway, oh well.

It is always good to take husband to appts. It is sad to say this but I have always been treated better when hubby is with me. They never bring up emotional reasons for pain with him in the room with me.

You are right too, all docs are specialized now, and no one looks at the whole picture, rarely. I have had chronic low grade fevers for the last year or two off and on and have been round the whole circle of docs I think. They never even work together on a patient, its sad. On many occasions I have had doctors say "I dont know what the problem is" and then you realize, doctors do not have all the answers. They are not this higher power than can heal all people. They do know a lot but not everything.

Hope you feel better soon!

Hi,
just some ideas here. If they say it could be a femoral hernia, what is the test to prove that? Have you had a CT scan? What does the general surgeon say about the hernia? Can they do an exploratory surgery to rule out femoral hernia?

I have never heard of seeing a surgeon every two months. Can you get a second opinion? I have thought of surgeons as either wanting to do surgery or not. That seems odd to me.

I do agree on the slight bulge should not be causing so much pain.

If your insurance company covers the mayo clinic and you have the time, I say go for it! I have heard they get you through all the specialists and all the tests in a weeks time. You kind of have to live there for at least 3-5 days.

Do not give up as you said in your post title, you can't give up, you are the only one to fight for yourself, and you need to keep up the fight.

I fought for 2 years to get surgery. I finally got it. Dont know if it has helped or not yet since i am only 3 weeks post op, but it took the right person who believed in me. Sometimes you need to let doctors go, they dont have your best interest in mind. I have let a few go for various reasons, no feelings hurt either way Im sure. Always remeraber we are paying them to help us ok??

Good luck, hang in there, and most of all never give up!

I posted couple of month ago a post about my brother-in-law who had same area horrible pain. Leaved on Percocet for 8 month and nobody could figure it out. They sent him to urologist, surgeon, GEntherologist, Ortho - nobody could help this poor man.
Well, finaly he went to Neurosurgeon. Even though all his MRI and Ct show nothing which could cause this pain - Dr believed he had pinched nerve in a very deep area of his spine. No tests can show this problem, just based on his symptoms.
He sent him to a very good to PT - nothing worked, than to Accupancture Dr (he has MD) and after 20 sessions, my brother-in-law is a different person. He is cured and he is doing well already for a year.

I believe in as many opinions as you need till you find the right one who will help you. Your body tells you something and please don't give up. Just search and you will be suprised what a difference whey you find a good, knowlegable Doctor.
Best wishes to you....

Why do they always assume we have emotional problems?, this just irritates me like you wouldn't believe, ya and when we have our hubby's or someone else in the room with us they treat us differently. I wish doctors would get taught in medical school that women are not messed up in the head when it comes to medical problems that our bodies are so much different then mens and our symptoms are so different also, please they need to wake up and treat us with respect. Some do, but there are some that don't.

Good Luck Reyne, sorry didn't mean to get off the subject, but when I see a doctor assuming it's emotional it charges me up, this happened to me 17 years ago and I almost died as a result of it.

PS the mayo clinic has a website, it lists insurance coverages that they take. Your primary care should be able to refer you , if you need a referral to go there. With my insurance , I do not need a referral as long as they are on the list of approved docs. Your pain mgmt doc can probably also refer you, depending on which doc you get along with better, or how your insurance works.

I agree don't give up. You may feel like it but you can't. If you give up how will you ever get a diagnosis?

I am sorry you did not get the answers you needed to hear today.

Reyne, I will be thinking of you! PLease get other opions you don't have to settle with just one!
Love, Monkey

No..you are not off subject Tulip. It is true that was the one time my hubby was not in the room and the hernia "specialist" pulled that crap on me. The spine "specialist" also was saying this might be something female.

I remeraber 20yrs ago when I pulled my back. My primary Dr did everything I never once had to go see a spine, hip or whatever specialist. I went to an Ortho to have the lipolma removed from my back..case closed on to PT. With this I have gone to 12 Dr's, several, several appt with my primary and nothing but huge bills, tons of meRAB, shots, tests and still no answers.

I am lucky that my Pain Doc..believes me and he does call my other Dr's that I have seen to get their opinion. I do not think he has alot of faith in Ortho Dr's anymore. He did send me to a nuerologist that he trusts and he thinks the pain in my groin is refered pain..but has no idea what the hard lump is!

Thanks for the reply's!! I have had 2 ct (chest & abs)scans and nothing. I had laporscopic done on my female parts but not in the groin. They did an MRI of the spine but this Dr did not see the purpose of MRI of the pelvis.

Yes my insurance covers everything. This year I would have to pay nothing because I have met my out of pocket for 2007. The pain med nurse thought it would be Feb or March of next year before I can get in!!:(

Not sure why he thought going to a surgeon every 2 months is a good idea?? They said they will not touch it (if it is a hernia) till it goes thru the wall.

I have run into many situations with drs. I swear have never been in real pain before. Take and ibuprofen they say. Shit if only I had thought of that myself...LOL. Hang in there. stay stuff and don't let the drs. get you down.
