No wonder you have felt bad. The house nearly burning down and the foreclosure part. That was nice of your grandparents to step up and help out. I don't have access to any help for ours I am afraid. But that's ok. It's just a house. We can live somewhere else when the times comes. I know most likely foreclosure is inevitable. We will survive. We are survivers. But it does stress any normal person out. Wether we like it or not.

You are so young! I hate to see you go through this. I just want to see you happy and healthy and doing all the fun things a 15 year old should be doing like playing your sports. I know you will get better! You are young and healthy. You have all that on your side!

IBS is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is when one minute you can be constipated and the next have diarrhea. :( Not fun. Sometimes you can just feel your intestines or tummy just rurabling. It's like things don't always settle right or make it out nice and smooth. To put it politely. lol
I do hope you don't have to deal with this.

As far as the chest pain. Is that from your reflux? Or from maybe coughing so much? DO you get alot of mucus in your throat with this? That is how I know mine is bad. Just a bad post nasal dripping and mucus in my throat and then a little burning right between my breasts in the sternum area. Lately I have little twinges of pain on the upper part of my tummy. It's like sore. Can you relate to any of this?

Thanks! I have told my frienRAB like i understand that they have no clue what to say and that they dont know what im going through, I just have stopped talking to a lot of people because they didnt care. They are young and dont want to believe that i was sick or w/e. When they thought i had asthma they all were there for me and now they know its quite a bit more complicated then that, they want nothing to do with it. When we are fighting they do say that they do care and im not alone, and all i have to say back is then why do i feel so alone?

A lot of girls dont understand why i dont want a boy friend either. I feel like i am purposely detaching myself from people. At first i was scared that what was wrong might have had cancer and i think its just how i have turned out that i try to block out anything that is going to cause me emotional pain. I finally just told one of my frienRAB that idk why im doing this but i am. I feel like i need to be alone until i get better, but at the same time i do need people in my life. I'm just 15 and want to have a life again before i get any older and before i have all the responsibilities of adults.

I am also out of gym. everyday i was almost throwing up from coughing so hard. It was erabarrassing and i was having friend trouble in that class so i finally just switched out. Im sorry gentille57 that you had and have so much trouble. How scared were you about the endoscopy? Im terrified only because i HATE needles. I never have had a shot and so needles and me arent really friendly. lol. I am going to request just to have the mask with it even if they dont put me all the way under.

Hi,

I'm sorry you're having to deal with so much at such a young age. Having to deal with health problems is never fun, but to do so when you're just starting out in life is just not fair.

I was diagnosed with GERD two years ago after coughing for four straight months. I thought it was respiratory problems related to a cold that I had had, but after doing some research, my doctor and I realized that it was GERD. So, if you've been coughing a lot, it could very well be from GERD. But you can live with GERD. It's not that bad.

Let me tell you my story to help you put things into perspective. I'm much older than you (46) and over the last three years, I've been diagnosed with GERD, a hiatal hernia, cervical cancer, and multiple sclerosis. I've always been healthy all of my life, and to have to deal with so much in such a short time has been almost overwhelming. I have nerve pain and pain from muscle spasms (Charlie horses) in my legs and arms from the MS almost every minute of every day. I've gone from being very active to not being able to walk without a cane. In the last two months, my arms have gotten so weak that I can't even open a bottle or container or corab my hair. I have severe short-term memory loss and cognitive problems which make doing my job (I'm a professor) very difficult. I've lost a lot of the vision in my left eye over just the last few months. I've had surgery for cancer, and have to have check-ups every three months to be sure that the cancer does not return.

Through all of this, I've found that having to deal with both cancer and a chronic, debilitating illness like MS has put into perspective relatively minor conditions like GERD. I take my meRAB, elevate the head of my bed, don't eat two hours before I go to bed, and don't give it another thought.

My point is, don't focus on your health so much. Take care of yourself, of course, seek medical treatment when needed, but get out there and LIVE! Life is short, and you are young. Enjoy each day, each minute, each second of life. If you do have GERD, it's not a death sentence or even a debilitating disease. You can still walk, talk, laugh, and love. Yeah, you might need to take some meRAB and alter your lifestyle a bit, but that's no big deal. Enjoy your frienRAB, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and stop dragging yourself and those you love down with what is a very treatable condition. Don't push people away. It's not worth losing frienRAB over.

I would give anything if all I had to worry about was acid reflux! Instead, I have to worry that I may not be able to walk at all soon, that I may lose all of the vision in my left eye, that I may not be able to do my job and support my family, or that the cancer will return and take my life. But I still live my life as best as I can. I still go out and enjoy my frienRAB, though I have had to modify the activities that I can do. I still enjoy my life with my husband. (We had just gotten married a few months before I became ill.) And for right now, I still am able to do the job that I love. I intended to get every ounce of joy out of the life God has given me, no matter what I may be facing. I may have GERD, cancer, and MS, but GERD, cancer, and MS don't have me!

So keep your chin up, Sweetie, and don't let this get you down. It's just not worth it!

Thank you! I will pray for you that your endoscopy will go fine and you wont feel it! Happy holidays!

The colRAB you have been getting could also trigger asthma if you have it. I think the coughing causes other problems. Even if the coughing isn't reflux caused, I find that all of the tightening of my ab muscles when I cough scrunches my stomach and aggrevates the reflux. The only good thing from all the coughing that I could come up with was that I get a good ab workout.

I'm extremely allergic to molRAB, dust, all small animals, grasses, pollens, weeRAB, etc... Those are what I'm getting immunotherapy for. I've also developed allergies to Sulfa, Zithromax and all bandage adhesives. I have some food sensitivities, but no true food allergies.

If you aren't ready to see a Pulmonologist, a good PCP should be able to get you started for treating your asthma problems. The Gastroenterologist should be able to help with the reflux related breathing issues. Be prepared to have a follow-up appointment after your EGD. Make sure you write out all of what you are currently taking as well as any questions you have for the doc.

Something else we have in common. I can relate with your catching stuff from school kiRAB. I'm in charge of operating classes for 700 low income preschoolers. Tons of germs around for 9 months of the year.

I've lived throughout the country. I've been in my current location for 14 years. I've considered looking at moving because of my allergies and asthma. This might help with the cold air asthma, but I've found that I develop new allergies now when I'm in new areas. Allergies to stuff that never used to bother me. If you ever seriously consider this, you should visit the area during high pollen times to find out. Also, I find that other enviromental things hit that I'm not prepared for. For example, where I currently live two years ago we had a bunch of wildfires. We also get inversions where the cold air gets trapped in the mountain valley and we end up with red air quality days. Makes breathing even harder.

Take care,

Hi all,
I'm right there with you. I've been officially diagnosed with reflux for about 5 years. I can honestly say that I've had ups and downs during this time. When it is under control, it isn't so bad, but I have had several really really rough years, first about 2 years ago, then this past year. I've had 2 endoscopies so far. The first one was my first procedure ever. I was nervous going in, but the procedure was so quick and easy that when I had my second one I just took it as a routine thing to do. Thankfully I had no findings during both procedures. The endoscopy only shows if there is damage or a hernia, not whether or not you have reflux. They were necessary though because both times my reflux was really flaring up my asthma. I would cough non-stop (probably to the annoyance of everyone around me). I even ended up needing emergency breathing treatment once. It is scary. Especially this last time when everything that was working just stopped working.

The procedures that were most beneficial to me were the Modified Barium Swallow and Esophagram, the 24 hr. pH, and the Manometry. My Pulmonologist prescribed the Barium Swallow and Esophagram. I had to swallow various things with barium--a fizzy pill, liquiRAB, soft fooRAB, soliRAB, etc... They then watched, on an x-ray type machine, as I chewed and swallowed. This test showed a hernia that I hadn't had 2 years earlier. It also showed that I was refluxing acid and food back up from my stomach. It showed how the acid was coming up to my lungs. It was after this that my Pulmonologist told me that I would never get my asthma under control until my reflux was under control. (Ironically, I hadn't had any asthma or reflux symptoms the week of the tests. Makes me wonder what they would look like when things are bad.) The Manometry test confirmed that my lower esophageal sphincter was not closing properly which allowed the refluxing to happen. The pH test confirmed both times that I had frequent episodes of acid coming up. In fact on the second time I was tested I was feeling pretty good that day and I ended up scoring as having extremely severe reflux.

Anyway, all of these tests helped me work with my Dr.'s to determine a treatment plan. The tough thing is that things work for a while, then stop working and we have to try other things. Though they don't cause significant relief, here are a few things you should try if you haven't already: sleep with your headboard propped about 6 inches (not fun sleeping on an incline, but helps some- propping on pillows will only scrunch your stomach and make things worse); try supplementing with Gaviscon (not the strawberry-banana though- yech); continue watching your diet and avoiding the following--fatty, greasy or fried fooRAB, spicy fooRAB including onions, peppers, tomato based products, caffeine drinks like coffee, tea and colas, citrus fooRAB and drinks, chocolate, alcohol and nicotine; don't eat at least 3 hours before laying down; avoid tight fitting clothes and belts; try not to bend over a lot it scrunches your stomach too.

Don't give up after trying one PPI. I've literally been on all of them and found that I can't tolerate some. For me, Prevacid Solutabs twice a day works best. I found that Nexium gave me severe stomach problems and diarrhea. In fact, after being on Nexium for one month, my digestive system was out of whack. Now, 7 months later I've officially been diagnosed with IBS-A. I can really relate with your stomach pains too.

I know I put a lot in this response. I just wanted you to know there are others going through the same stuff. Things aren't always bad, but it seems like the bad times really do last for long perioRAB. Em, I can relate with your issues dealing with others about this. There are times that I think people at my work don't really believe that I'm truely sick. I think some may actually believe that I'm faking all that coughing. It's a tough thing.

I'm going to post another response to share my EGD experience. I hope it will help.

Take care,
MountainReader

Mornings are for sure not the best time of day. The last week or so i have woken up with a sore throat. Hurts really bad to eat,, trying to eat some toast right now and im coughing and throat is really hurting. I thought i might be getting sick so i have been taking 12 hour decongestants on top of the zantac. I will ask the doctor tomorrow about the sore stomach area. I hope that doesnt mean it is getting worse but i know mine is. It has since last year greatly! That was my main concern that this wasnt asthma cause asthma usually doesnt progress like this. I wasnt surprised when they ran the tests and found out i didnt have asthma. Nobody knows your body better than you do.

Ulcers are usually found somewhere by the stamach i think, but could also be in the lungs or somewhere but its rare. During the endoscopy i think if they find one they will pull a sample off of it to test it and make sure there is no cancer starting or present. Do you have to like eat slowly to try and like digest the food. I have noticed expecially in the morning, it takes me about 20 minutes just to get down 3-4 pieces of toast. I live 20 minutes from my bus stop and it takes most of the way to get it all down and i sometimes feel really crappy after i eat. can u relate at all?

My grandma has some acid problems as well and she heard that if you sleep on your left side it helps the acid to stay down,, but i cant. The other morning i woke up to a sharp painful pain in my left side and i was on my left side. It was much better after i got up but it was very painful. Last night i was on my left side watching tv and had to turn over because i could feel it comming on. Im scared that that is not normal. If it is suppose to help, and helps her, why is that side so sensitive to being touched or laid on?

hi
so sorry that you are going throu all this..i have got to the stage that i kind of low key everything down with my freinRAB they dont want to hear about my numerous illnesses (however i do have a couple of amazing lifelong freinRAB that care so much they have searched out help for me themselves)

i guess the thing is that people dont understand what they cant feel, for example if someone treid to explain the pain of a pinched nerve in their back and you have never had it then you cant imagine that its as bad as they say.................the brain is amazing in that it forgets pain very quickly, thankdgoodness.............the freinRAB that are worth it will hang around, you are young and you will make lots of amazing freinRAB and you wil get a boyfreind that will care about you.........at the moment its all abuot you and getting better!!! and you will get better.................im on natropath stuff on top of my PPI and my LPR is amost gone!!!!!! ive also been drinking herbal teas that he has given me with pepermint leaf in it and no LPR....i still have a long way to go with my other stomach issues but its a start..........try a natropath i cant reccomend it enough...ness

Hi yeah that is what my mom thinks and because she gets them, i trust that might be it. I will let my doctor know if it gets worse but it has stopped as of now. I get it every once in a while for like a day and then it is gone.

kinda weird.

Hi nessie, I did tell my mom. She thinks i need to eat more vegies and that is the problem. So far my doctor hasnt mentioned making me get an colonscopery but i am going to have my mom call her tomorrow and tell her that i am bleeding. My mom might be right that i need to eat more vegies and more fiber, but i dont even have to go to the bathroom to get little spots of blood on the paper. This has happened before and she thought the same thing.

Tn, Im sorry for what is happening with you, and i look up to the fact that you still live a life. I dont know how you do it, i just want to sleep all day. I have no energy so i dont know how you still do. I dont think that im loosing frienRAB because of this, I think im just young still and frienRAB move on.

Just wanted to share my experiences with getting upper endoscopies done. While both experiences I had were similar, one was done at a hospital and the other done at a testing center just for upper and lower endoscopies (colonoscopies). While the procedures were done the same, I had ALOT more wait time before and after at the hospital. I know that not every doctor does it the same, but I think the general procedure is pretty similar for all. My intention in sharing this is to help ease your minRAB, not to scare you. I wish you the best as you go into having your procedures done. Please let me know if you have any questions.

First, they have you not eat anything after midnight before your procedure. My second appointment was in the early morning, but my first was early afternoon and I was really hungry after that. If you are taking medications, ask your doctor about whether you can take them with a sip of water on the day of your procedure. It depenRAB on the medications. Once you arrive, they will have you complete some paperwork and possible make some sort of a payment. While some of the paperwork can be concerning, it is pretty standard stuff. Once they call you back, they will have you remove your upper clothing and put on a gown. They also had me remove my shoes and put on their socks with non-stick soles. Once the gown is on, they come back and put a needle in your right hand with the connection that they will use to administer the sedation medication with. When ready, they will move you to the procedure room. I was wheeled in once and I walked the other time. Once on the bed in the procedure room, they will connect you to a monitor to measure your blood pressure and oxygen. They will also put an oxygen tube up against your nose. All through this, they are talking to you and explaining what they are doing. They then had me turn onto my left side. When ready, the doctor came in to see if I had any questions. They then put a plastic ring in my mouth. The ring holRAB your mouth open and keeps you from biting on the scope. They then administered the medication. I was out both times before they could finish telling me. The next thing I knew, I was wide awake and they were wheeling me into another room. It is really wierd how fast I went from being out of it to being wide awake. They sat me up and offered me something to drink. This I found ironic. They offered soda or OJ which are both reflux triggers. I opted for just water. I then got dressed and waited for the doctor to come in to tell me what he found. They can tell you then if they saw any redness or damage. They might have also done some bioposies. Those make take several days to a week to get results from The doctor also gave me any treatment instructions at that time also. I then scheduled a follow-up appointment one week out to discuss any test results and further review the findings and plan out my treatment. The first time, there was no soreness in my throat, the second time I had a bit of soreness. Both times, I ate a good meal immediately after. They will tell you not to drive during the day of the test. I think that is really just precautionary. I never had any problems.

I hope this helps you some.

Hi I have good news from the doctor. I finally got the right doctors!! YAH!:jester: The nurse and doctor i saw confirmed that i had GERD and after a very rough exam she did said she felt no growths and that Some of my pains are from being sick so long this summer. She said that because my old doctor didn't do ANYTHING test wise she couldn't confirm for sure but she said my lung tissues are probably all bruised really bad and until i can stop coughing completely they wont be able to heal. The other cause is she is pretty sure i have a hiatal hernia and she said unless it is reallllly big than she wont ask for surgery because it can either go good or bad.

She put me on nexium once every night for a week and if that isn't strong enough she said to take a zantac also in the day and to call her if that wasn't strong enough and she would try to get me back in or a different prescription.
I go back in 7 weeks(first opening lol) and then she said she might have to send me to an upper gi for an endoscopy. I told her i was willing to do anything if it would help.

FrienRAB are still being stupid, and i noticed last night when i got really upset that my sides hurt really bad. I am going to mention that to her next time because i think that would be from acid.

Keep faith and happy new year. Lets make this a good one!
;)

Hi Em! It's all so different throughout the day., I woke up with mucus. Ugh! But got up slowly.. had a banana and some whole grain cereal and water. Took some vitamins etc...I thought hey those stomach pains are gone, and the anxiety and depression. I felt ok....

So then I just worked out on the treadmill for a fast walk of 30 mins. I felt really good and was breathing ok. But then I stopped and got off of it...to get back on here. Then I feel like I was trying to get a full breath in. Taking big deep breaths. Ugh! The mucus is thick. Good grief! I honestly had simmered the mucus down a couple of days ago with the Prilosec. But the side effects were bad! So I quit. This is day 3 without anything.

So what do you think I should I do? I have some Zantac. Should I start it? I am afraid of side effects. Do you have side effects from it at all?

Em
eating or not eating the right thing has nothing to do with bleeding!!!!! something is causing it and it is not fromm enough fibre!!!! Im glad that you are going to ring the doctor it is very important that he knows ALL of your symptoms in order to properly help you...................dont strees thou please its prob something simple!!! the more you tell the doctor the better, every single symptom even if its erabarrasing...............they are their to help you..
take care sending you hugs from NZ ((((((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))))

I certainly hope that with your new Dr's you will get good results. Just remeraber that it takes awhile to get everything back in balance and it takes much more than taking meRAB. You have to put forth some effort too. I am not good at this so I hope you have more luck than me:) Don't think in 6 weeks or 8 weeks that you will be all well because it may take longer. Having a good attitude helps a lot!

MR, You are so important to this board and even though I have been thru the mill, you always take the time to explain the test so well that I'm sure it re-assures those that have not had them yet. I will just add that they really are not as bad as you think and I do believe you need to have them to rule out other serious problems and get a proper diagnoses. If I had been pointed in the right direction years ago, I might have been able to avoid a lot of other things caused by GERD and LPR. Things that can't be changed.

God Bless you MountainReader! What you posted is what I needed to hear. I have been so frightened about my first endoscopy that is only a week away. A week from tomorrow. I guess I am worried I will be allergic to the sedation or that I will feel the tube and choke on it. I just haven't been sedated or obviously had a tube down my throat.

It's just the mystery of the procedure being done and also what they might find. My reflux seems to be based with tons of Mucus covering my throat, lots of throat clearing, some pain from time to time in the sternum, and the feeling that my throat is thick and feeling like I can't get a full breath in. I feel like maybe I have asthma but have never been diagnosed with it. I have an allergist I see because I have tons of allergies. He has never said that I have asthma. How do I know if this stuff is going into my lungs?? That really scares me.

I have had bad coughing spells this fall with colRAB...I was wondering if I developed acid reflux due to my allergies and the fact that I went through about 4 bags of cough drops. I would cough so much and about loose my breath. I thought I would die because I couldn't get a breath in. I got codeine cough syrup but that made me sick.

I am trying to figure out how I ended up with all these problems. Thanks for your help! Big hugs from me!

Thanks Nessie, I am trying to do the same. I have stopped telling a few of them about how my doctors appointment goes and how i feel. Even the good days are hard because i know that it wont last. I am having bloody stools now but i havent told anyone cause last time it went away. If i go to the bathroom again and get more blood then i am going to tell my parents.

I am just leaning on my two frienRAB now that i know will always be there.

I am not a doctor but what I have always heard is that bright red blood (fresh) is not a big concern as it is probably coming from near the "exit"--dark tarry blood is definitely a concern. I also had a wise doctor who once told me that "sinister problems, like cancer, generally do not have symptoms that come and go--they are generally consistent, and usually get worse". SO keep that in mind! That has helped me many a times.

Hello Everyone,

I know how you all feel. I was told by my boss yesterday how "self centered" I was complaining all the time. I HATE when I do that but you would think as much as I cough and can't breath good that he would be more understanding. It's certainly not like I do it on purpose and I'm sure I drive everyone around me crazy including myself! My poor husband has learned to ignore me, thankfully. I've just stopped taking any meRAB for my LPR because they weren't doing me a bit of good. I'm fine as long as I sit real still and don't move but I literally can't do anything without feeling the need to sniff and cough. Sometimes to where I'm exhausted. Especially lately with all the Christmas stuff going on, eating everything (which, doesn't seem to make much difference anyway) being off schedule and not getting enough rest. I know all of my symptoms have to be reflux related since with the cold weather we've been having that there shouldn't be anything for me to be allergic too. Also, taking every allergy med under the sun doesn't make a dent. Not even the nasal meRAB. The feel like I'm choking every morn when I get up until I get all the mucus and crud out of my nose and throat. No burning at all. Just sniff and cough.
