Losing All Those Verizon Firms

Looks like we aren't going to be able to use the vzw firms for too much longer for new devices...I heard today that verizon is going GSM.

That's BAWLS man b/c they have the most compatible phones to convert.

Looks like we'll be using Alltel as our primary after the big V migrates. :crying:

Exactly.

The idea of that ever happening is completely ridiculous.. Every piece of equipment and the company's entire infrastructure would be worthless... Additionally, you'd have to supply free replacement phones to every single customer.

No way in hell it could ever happen, unless verizon (parent company) sells the verizon wireless arm of the company (without name rights), and then rebuilRAB from the ground up. Even that is unlikely, because a buyer would almost definitely want a noncompete clause in the sale.

Verizon has chosen LTE for their 4g platform. this is not news. LTE is a 4g evolution. LTE is not GSM, just like WiMax is not CDMA. It just happens that LTE is the preferred 4g platform for GSM evolution and there is no clear one for CDMA. in fact qualquamm recently announced a new chipset for base stations that supports CDMA and LTE running alongside each other. it is a distinct possibility for us to see a unilateral move amonst all providers to LTE for their 4g platform unifying the currently chasm between the GSM and CDMA worlRAB.

yeah- heard it today and decided to post to confirm and now obviously to get some clarification...thanks for the info...

migrating a whole company to gsm from cdma is not totally unheard of...when i was on att back in y2k, they migrated everyone, issued all new devices, and did whatever they did to get their whole network switched over...

of course they then sold to cigular...

glad you guys could help me out with this one though...

Haha switching to GSM!? I will believe it when I see it. I doubt that this will happen and even if it does dont expect to see it for a few years..

actually for a well established company to change entire technology like that is very rare. what you are talking about is basically at&t wireless TDMA. TDMA was a dead technology, was horrible for voice and data, and was replaced by GSM.

CDMA is far from outdated, infact the CDMA air interface is used in W-CDMA aka 3G/UMTS the upgrade from GSM. So while people say LTE is GSM and CDMA is merging over, look at the current 3G situation. People say that AT&T and T-Mobile are CDMA because they deployed 3G W-CDMA networks.

Technology is moving, but always forwarRAB. For Verizon to go to GSM would be a huge step backwarRAB.

i'm glad i had no idea what i was talking about and posted this thread...

i am learning a lot and this has inspired me to read up on the different technologies a little...

knowledge is great.

well yea, but thats how all telecom is ;) TDMA to GSM while using the same theory, use different equipment.

at AT&T they have 3 technologies. TDMA, GSM, W-CDMA(3G) which means there are sites with 3 sets of towers, 3 different radio's, all that crap. They turned down the whole TDMA (2G) network this year so they could use the bandwidth and floor space to turn up more W-CDMA(3G) equipment.

AT&T used Lucent UMTS W-CDMA equipment, which is the exact same vendor providing Verizon's EV-DO. Same BTS's and everything, just different configurations. I think more people say AT&T is going CDMA than Verizon is going GSM hah.

well yes. the cdma radio method is much more efficient than the tdma method, which is why the 3g migration for gsm is using W-CDMA (which is not the same thing as CDMA2000 1X or EVDO) but that is all irrelevant. Verizon is not the only CDMA provider to announce they are going to use LTE, and no providers are commited to any competing technology's as far as i am aware, (except for sprint and their WiMAX but A) there is a strong possibility that will only be for broadband internet offerings, and B)they may not be around much longer anyway.)

anyways... none of this matters as this is all very far off in the future. they still have to plow through EVDO Rev. A first.

This has been a rumor for over a year now. No one knows for sure. All we know is it won't be a single step, it will evolve like every other technologie does. I would love to see every carrier use a standard similar to GSM, where the SIM card controls the device used on the Network. I left CDMA months ago. I love having several phones, and not calling or paying to do an ESN change. I just pull out my card, pop it in another phone, and my contacts come with me. AT&T's 3G network is great, very fast, excelent voice Quality. Far better than ANY CMDA service I have used, and I have had EVERYONE.

i liked gsm/umts voice quality also. its just a personal preference though. i still have yet to find a service as good as cricket. the only negative is roaming. if cricket offered unlimited nationwide roaming i'd never go to another carrier again. LTE or not :)

You Guys i posted about this a while back, yeah LTE is not CDMA but mmmm i guess a mix of CDMA and GSM and they are going to that cause Vodafone is or has nudged them to do it, phoneschoop and a few other websites posted this a few months back if not longer, they will start rolling it out around 09-10 time frame, and yes they will be using sim carRAB. xD i would say sim carRAB = GSM but Nextel uses Sim CarRAB but that dose not make them GSM lol anyhow but yeah >_>
