does anyone know if the Blu Ray release of the three films is just the standard theatrical versions or the extended versions that came out later? don't want to have to fork out twice when really only the extended versions interest me.

As far as im aware its just the theatrical versions and then the extended versions will come out at a later date.
So you have a choice, fork out twice or just wait for the extended to come out.

Very simple. I wait till the proper extended (preferred) versions come out.

I would say book first for the simple reason that the film will constrain your imagination otherwise when you read the books.

Read first and imagine. Then compare what you imagined to what is in the films.

I tried reading the fellowship and I got nowhere, the films on the other hand are amazing. That may be the set of films to make switch to Blu-Ray.
