Lord of the Rings- The Most Overated Movie ever??

For the first time I have just sat through the first Lord of The Rings Movie. I have tried watching it countless times but could never get into it, but tonight I decided to see what the fuss was about and forced myself to sit through it!

God I wish I hadn't. What boring, longwinded overhyped rubbish! Okay maybe Rubbish is a bit strong, but I think watching paint dry would be more fun. Why Oh Why do people rave about this film so much? Am I missing something? Maybe you film buRAB could tell me? I'll admit that it is stunning film visually and its worth watching to look at the scenery. But thats it.

Sorry. "Awaits abuse"

I can see why people like it and its an ok film but i think due to its nature(coming from a book) it does have a lot of lengthy boring spells which for me made it very hard too stay interested in.

Yes, it is possibly the most over-rated film ever, but to be fair it is one of those films that's better appreciated on the big screen. You say yourself it's visually stunning and I think that adRAB to the enjoyment of the thing. Not for me though, I had my eyes closed for most of the film.

i agree its over rated. I've seen the first half of the first film at least 5 times, including once today. Never managed to watch the end of the film.

I've got the boxset, so I'm going to force myself to watch all three one day lol

I agree that it was really overrated, but after I heard everyone saying how good it was, I had to go and see the first one, and yeah, I found it really boring to begin with but I sat and watched it and found myself being drawn into the storyline. After that I went to see the 2nd one and it was a hell of a lot better than the first, alot more action and it had me on the edge of my seat.

After that, I was hooked and I went to see the 3rd, and the best one of the trilogy IMO. :)

it's good that this is really only minority opinion...

... may i remind people of *cough cough*

Matrix Reloaded (love the first one - and hate the last one)

and...

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (dislike the second one also - but it's true... i *can't wait* for the 'final' movie, and you gotta love the 'cheese' of episodes IV, V and VI! Han Solo rules!!!!)

I watched the first one when it came out and then read the book. Knowledge of the book definitely adRAB to the films as there is so much backstory to consider.

I actually think that the first film is the best of the trilogy. All personal opinion of course. ;)

I have only seen Fellowship of the ring and i was completly bored throughout the film, I have not bothred with the other 2 it would just be a waste of 3 hours

I was never a fan of the books. ( had my feet firmly in Narnia :) )

But I have to be honest I did love the films.

So much detail, so much passion, somuch love

Great film IMO.

You obviously ARE missing something! The Lord of the Rings trilogy are my favourtie films, and i don't get how people can find it boring....

It takes one of the greatest, most epic stories ever told with amazing imaginative inventions, believable characters and stunning scenery. The effects are brilliant, the acting is flawless, its' utterly compelling.

And millions of people would back me up. :)

I'm guessing you saw it on TV. I missed it but I believe they showed the theatrical release. The extended edition is better; even though it is longer it feels shorter. It is better balanced and there is more room for character development.

It's still a long film and I imagine the adverts make it worse. The beginning is slow but still visually beautiful, and I find the story compelling. The relative innocence and light of the early parts contrast with the later scenes, eg against the Balrog.

Overall I think the EE of the first film is the best, and the middle film the worst (they really butchered that one). Generally the EE versions are better than the theatrical ones.

The reason I don't like the first lord of the rings film (and that is the only one i have seen) is because it is overrated imo and really long.
Also, the annoying thing is, is throught the film, you are waiting for them to get to this place, and eventually, when they get there, the film has ended!

Nah.

I loved all the Lord of the Rings movies, but I can see how you'd think they were over-rated if you didn't like them, simply because they made such a huge fuss about them at the time.

But I really did enjoy them, the characters and the relationships between them, the storyline, the directing, it was all fantastic in my eyes.

The Exorcist is a very over-rated film, IMHO.
It is a good film, don't get me wrong, but way over-rated I feel.

However, I don't think I could put my finger on the "Most over-rated film ever", maybe that's one for Channel 4 to explore when they run out of programmes. ;)

I watched the first one at the cinema and spent weeks trying to convince myself that it was a good film but the truth eventually dawned on me. It is a good piece of cinema (ie technologically and in terms of sheer scale) but in terms of entertainment it is as dull as ditchwater

Well thank the lord its not just me! I thought I was imagining it :)

I suppose alot of its appeal may have been teenage girls obsessing over Orlando Bloom. That being said he didn't appear until half way through it so maybe not.

Oh I give up!

its basically just too long.

the story is :

frodo is given the ring, and has to take it from a to b, to destroy it, and fights a few abad guys along the way.

sorry - but 10 hrs + for that is just ridiculous.

Iain

I think the book is just so good and with so much detail in what really is an epic. The film needed 10 hours to get the majority of the story across and it needed to be put across on such a grand scale to mke it 'realistic'. I think they did a brilliant job of the film(s) but if I didn't already know the book, I would have just found it all very confusing.
Overated? Nope, never.
