Went to get my oil changes at 66,000k and the guys at Merlin told me that I needed a new water pump and cutch for the fan and wanted $795.00 to fix it. They told me I needed custom parts. Me and my mechanic friend called O'reilys auto parts and they have them in stock for $53.99 for each. (The pump is remanned.) Are they just trying to rip me off? When all said is done with more coolant and tool I should be able to do it myself with him (he's certified) for $150. Any thoughts or insight?

That's crazy buy the pump and fan clutch if you need to and do it yourself. If the fan is loose see where the play or slack is and fix it. Id change them both for good measure if you have the cash. Go for it that's not to bad of a job.

Yup, you're being ripped off. And, it may not even be bad after all. Have someone who's honest check it out for you.

It's an easy job and should cost under $300 for an honest mechanic to change it out.
