Looks like the democrats can't handle their own transparency

Yes, I have. And although I have no love for the GOP, the Dems are the ones crying the loudest about it.

Like I said...when they're on my dime, and their decisions directly affect my life and livelihood, they should be under a microscope. They should tremble at the mere thought of being caught red-handed abusing their authority or outright breaking the law.

They work for us. They should answer to us. Daily.

I read the article. It seems the thing that caused this latest flare up is the OCE turning some information over to the DoJ. I see nothing wrong with that. The DoJ can determine whether anything was wrong.

I recently saw a poll that said 22% of Americans trust their government. If anything, this committee should get more flexibility.

Look, I agree with you. If they are doing something wrong, they should be punished. and not just slap on the wrist or a censure, but expulsion.

but if the charges aren't true,or cannot be proven, I don't think it should be made public. I think that is fair.

in all seriousness, it seems like the black members of congress have more than their fair share of ethics related issues. so it's especially interesting that the CBC is pushing to close OCE down

It's one thing if the charges can't be proven, it's very much another thing if the investigation into those charges aren't done at all, or "government investigates itself".

I don't think it was handled professionally. It would have been easy for the special prosecutor/lead investigator to make a phone call through the proper back channels without having to publicly embarass the congressmen. I think it was pretty disrespectful to them as individuals to be treated as suspects when they were not. Like it or not, these our are leaders and they do deserve some dignity.

You wouldn't treat a judge or a sheriff this way.

ok? I have no problem with the special prosector doing the investigation and turning over the findings to the ethics committee.

if the case is really compelling and they don't investigate it or do anything, thats when you leak it to 60 mins or whoever. realpolitik solution.

but again-- in this country we are innocent until proven guilty. In the court of public opinion, we don't stick to that very often.

when our "leaders" decide to strangle amateur reporters on the sidewalk, no, I don't think they deserve dignity.

when congress accuses BP of being criminally negligent, or points fingers at unpopular industries, or whatever else they do on an almost daily basis, are they as considerate of their targets as you want people to be towards congress?

from reading the article, the ethics office definitely needs to be tweaked. i think the proposed changes are sensible.

If the legislators are against it, it must truly be a good thing.

Anything they do "out of line" should be made public. They are no better than us, and they are not a privileged class.

Apparently, they are forgetting who works for whom. And they should be subject to any and all laws they pass or have passed.

I totally disagree. When the public at large distrust the government to the tune of something like 78%, there needs to be a shitton of transparency. If any congressman is embarrassed, I would say he will do well when his name is cleared and he gets to brag about it. Hidden investigations are not trusted at this time.

I still think the best one was when some dickhead tried to force those companies that restated their incomes to a lower profit because of the healthcare legislation to testify before congress.

Then quickly cancelled the testimony because the companies were merely following the law.

They work for us, and we have both the right and responsibility to monitor everything they do in an official capacity. If they don't like that...they can fucking resign. It's time we put an end to their arrogance and remind them who it is they answer to.

hey bruce dickinson, did you hear the one about the congressman who told BP's CEO to go kill himself?

sounds kind of familiar, I think I remember something like this last year during the financial crisis.

how's that "deserving of respect" thing going for you?
