Looking for some friendly advice (M50)

Hello All,

I'm brand new to the forum. I stumbled upon this site completely by chance and glad I did so.

I'm here to educate myself specifically about the Suzuki M50. I have never owned a motorcycle yet, however, I've been interested in purchasing one for about 2 years now. I just haven't pulled the trigger...too many to choose from I guess.

After my 2 year search I have finally found that the Suzuki M50 is exactly what I am looking for. I like everything about it! I can't stop thinking about it to be honest.

I'm not sure about the do's and don'ts of this message board "policies" so if I am in violation of wrong do...just let me know.

I would like to know some experiences of those who have purchased bike brand new from a dealer. Specially price and negotiating. I am a little confused on the MSRP $6899.00 of the 2008 Suzuki M50 vs what my local dealer is asking...$7999.00. Obviously they are there to make a profit.

I'm wanting to know what a fair out the door price is? without taxes etc. I understand there are several variables to the actual sale price (adding a helmet, jacket and other accessories)

Just hoping to get a little feedback from those that have been around the block a time or two. Thanks in advance to everyone taking the time to read and/or post a comment.

Not all dealers are equal. So shop around.

The out the door price should be MSRP + State Sales Tax + State Title Fee + State Registration Fee. Dealers often try to add $300-500 for assembly, but you should reject this as the cost of assembling the bike is already included in MSRP. Some will also add a line for "ADP", which is "additional dealer profit", and you should not pay that either. The extended warrantee should also be listed separately, as it is purely optional. If the dealer really wants your business, he should come down slightly from that, or offer incentives like free helmet and jacket, a $100-500 coupon for free parts & accesories, a big discount on any accessories you purchase at the dealer, free first service, or something like that to sweeten the pot.

This time of year the delers should be already starting to add incentives.
My local Suzuki/Yamah dealer will never charge MSRP for any new bike. They also allow test rides so I think they are a little more service oriented than your typical dealer.

e.g. I paid $6000 otd. for my 2007 S50 in October of 2006. MSRP was $6499. (no sales tax in OR)

The local Honda/Kawasaki dealer tries to add the assembly fee to all new bikes. We only managed to get $300 off MSRP on my wife's Vulcan 500.

Adding accessories and riding gear actually gives you more leverage on negotiating a price as the profit margins on most accessories are higher for the dealer, so when you get saddlebags for $500 (retail) thrown in, it's really only a $300 or less hit to the dealer.

If it's your first bike, you may also want to consider a maintenance/warranty program if offered. A typical 3 year prepaid maintenance program for a 800cc bike should run about $1100-1400 with 3 year warranty.
It seems like a lot, but it's cheaper than doing separate oil changes and services at regular shop rates. If you can do the work yourself, then I'd recommend just doing the first service at 600 miles through the dealer.
Personally I could do the oil myself but would probably be in over my head with carb syncing and valve adjustment. I still have them change the oil as my plan has unlimited oil changes, plus they wash the bike everytime I bring it in!

Thanks for everyones input!

Suzuki's official website states $6,999.00 MSRP for the 2008 M50. My dealerships website states $6,899.00 MSRP but they're asking $7,999.00. (at first I thought their asking price was a mistake...I'm not sure what to think now though?)

I am a little confused one why some pay over the MSRP? Isn't the MSRP the same $ value where ever you go...within the states that is.

Does anyone know what a ballpark invoice price would be. (what the dealership gets them for?)

Kelly Blue Book values a 2008 Suzuki M50 at $5,905.00 as of June 11, 2008. (excellent used condition)

Just some more info to kick around I guess...

The MSRP on a motorcycle generally reflects betwen a 5% and 10% profit for the dealer, but they also make profit off the financing and any accesories, and a HUGE profit off the extended warrantee, so the total dealer profit on a sale is usually 10-15%. But the manufacturer will often give incentives to the dealer to push a certain model or clear out existing inventories, which is why dealers can often sell well below MSRP and still make money.
What did the dealer use to justify the $1100 mark up? Accessories? Assembly and prep fees? Taxes? An extended warrantee? Or is he just jacking up the price?

Hi there, I am new to the forums but thought I could provide some input.

I just bought a 2008 M50 like 3 weeks ago and paid 6500 +300 warranty. I am in Indiana just outside of Chicago if that helps. I did not buy any accessories at that time but I did return to the dealer to order new pipes. You can check out my videos of the before and after

I don't pay MSRP for cars if I buy them new and I won't pay MSRP for bikes if I buy them new. However, my philosophy has changed recently and I won't buy either _new_ now. I'll buy older bikes at below KBB price if stock or maybe near if enough cool mods have been done.

I got a great deal out of cycle trader, a 2007 with only 650 miles on it, he had bought saddle bags, crash bars, floor boards and a shield, not to metion he had a transferable service agreement that he had not even used. I had the first service done today. I still have eleven more to go or two years left which every comes first. I paid $5400 he was asking $6,000. Check craigslist, I found a bunch of bikes I was interested in. I hate dealing with the dealers, they rip you off. Hope this helps.

I bought my 08 M50 about a month ago for $6599. I was able to pay my sales tax at the dealer( about 400 here in arkansas) and they did the assessment and registration and mailed me the tags so no trip to the revenue office, YEA!!!. Thye beat my local dealers price by 400 to get me to drive 70 miles to get it. I was in my local dealer this week to get some saddlebag brackets and the M50 I was looking at is still sitting on the showroom floor :)
