Looking for secondary Android phone to experiment with

I use a Nexus One daily and don't want to mess it up by testing out new ROMS and such on it. So, I want to get a secondary phone to mess around with.

I thought I wanted something really small like the HTC Aria but now the HTC Wildfire S is out and I really like the white version. But I've also wanted a HTC Desire Z (G2) because of the hardware keyboard.

Which phone should I get? Which one would give me the most options to test out AOSP? I know the Wildfire S is brand new so it will take a while for ROMs to come out for it but it is almost exactly like the Aria but with some added features.

I can get the Wildfire S for $250 brand new, the Aria for around $200 used (ebay) and there is a used Desire Z for sale in my city for $240.

If I were you, I would look at the list of supported phones for Cyanogenmods before deciding on anything.

The Desire Z is probably a phone that is better as a primary serve-your-life kind of phone, while the Nexus One for experiments and all that. That's what the Nexii are for --- the only phones in the world that were deliberately meant for experimentation.

But if you're really happy with the Nexus as your primary device, don't follow my advice.
