spankondrums

Hello folks my name is Lewis, but my user name is spankondrums, because I play drums, and you can call me ether one of those names. I suffer from Rhinitis and I would say Sinusitis too. I have had 2 sinus operations in the last 3 years to correct a deviated septum and polyp removal the first operation. Then almost 2 years later the polyps had returned, so in May of 2010 I had another polyp removal. And this one was more successful than the first one. I am using a drug called Pulmicort I mix it with Sodium Chloride and irrigate my sinuses 2 times a day, now I still have my smell after this second operation, and the Pulmicort, which my doctor had to fight the VA, to get them to use this drug, is keeping out the polyps. But I am still having a chronic post nasal drip, with bad coughing, and I have to use a nebulizer to open up my airways, the lungs work in sympathy with the sinuses, and if you clear up the sinuses your lungs and the coughing will clear up. I am really, really tired of this chronic post nasal drip. Prednisone clears this stuff up, but you can't stay on it forever because the side effects with raised sugar and blood pressure, and depression, can be very bad on you. And if you are a male and use stuff like Allegra, and Claritin, and some of the others, they can enlarge your prostate. Now you got out of control sinuses and a football size prostate, oh "yippie". So what I want is, some kind of way to stop this post nasal drip, those bad coughing episodes are becoming to much for me, sometimes I will cough up mucus from the lungs for 2 hours, and by then I am drained, like I am as I type this. So could someone tell me what works for them, to stop that drip, for long term ? I know there are a lot of people out there just like me, so please share what works for you.
So to those who suffer from this, I know your pain, but if you have found relief please tell us how and what you used please, thanks in advance.

The Pulmicort thing is interesting. The main ingredient in Pulmicort is Budesonide, which also happens to be the main ingredient in a nasal spray called Rhinocort. I wonder why your doctor didn't just put you on Rhinocort (and have you use that after you rinse with saline.

Beyond that there are a couple of other things you might consider:

1. Singulair seems to help reduce the recurrence of nasal polyps. It's an anti-inflammatory medication that inhibits the body's release of one of the chemicals that causes inflammation in the lining of the sinuses and lungs, and generally has minimal side effects.

2. As for the post-nasal drip, one of the more common causes of PND is acid reflux. It causes coughing and asthma-like symptoms and even sinus inflammation and PND (the PND is actually your body's way of trying to protect the inflamed areas of you esophagus by increasing the production of mucus to coat those areas). Some people have a type of acid reflux called LPR that doesn't cause heartburn, but causes inflammation of the bronchi in the
lungs, the esophagus, and the sinuses. Many people with LPR see a dramatic improvement in their breathing issues, their PND and sinus symptoms when they get their LPR under control (which isn't always easy but is worth the effort).

Hey you know what man, my regular doc has just put me on Omeprazole, because she said the same thing that you just said about the acid. So I am going to start taking it today on a regular basis. I hope that is the cause because something can be done about it. and as for the Rhinocort, I don't know why he did not use it, but the VA has to approve everything. Dr Cohen, my doctor had to fight the VA to get Pulmicort approved Pulmicort he says is the best treatment to come along in 15 years and he has seen many people who has tried everything and it did not work, try Pulmicort, and have very good results. I live in Philadelphia, but I hope his fight for Pulmicort went nationwide. I am a chef, so you know I can't be coughing and hacking around food, and when I am playing drums a coughing spell can kill a show. But I am so glad that you mentioned the acid thing, because I had forgot to take the stuff. And I also have mountains of prednisone in case I need it. I am very glad that I found this board, I am here to stay, for the health of my family and my health.

The one thing I forgot to talk about was the repeated use of different antibiotics which some don't even work anymore. As you all know, taking to many antibiotics can cause many problems down the road. The thing is, up in the sinuses it is dark and moist which is the perfect place for bacteria growth.
And by us secreting more mucus than normal, infections are going to happen, and also polyps will form. So the thing with us is to get our sinuses working as properly as we can. The body can make a quart or more a day of mucus. So with all that mucus going on a infections is going to happen. Now comes the taking of antibiotics over and over again. Now with this over use of antibiotics, comes the threat of other types of bacteria, to be counted into the equation, and it is a never ending cycle for some people, and I am one of them.
