If it was a completely free version with no trials, etc. then it was probably pirated, meaning it's an illegal download. You could potentially get arrested or fined for this if you do it.

You just have to buy it to gain access to all features. Ask her if she used a website called "The Pirate Bay" or used a program called Limewire or uTorrent, BitTorrent, something like that for it. In that case, it was an illegal download.
 
my sister told me that she downloaded a free version of photoshop cs3 extended (not a free trial) but doesnt remember where she got it from. does anyone have an idea where i could get this?
 
She may have gotten the free trial and just misread it. That, or she bought a product that came with Photoshop Essentials, which is a stripped down version of Photoshop CS3 or CS4. Like David said, if she got the full version as a free download, then its very very likely it was an illegal download from a Bittorrent program.
