Looking for historical situations where people acted on misinterpretations of words?

I am looking for historical situations where words have been misinterpreted and led to extreme actions
ex:crusade, flagellatism, etc
If you have the bible passage for the above or any other situations where people have acted from their interpretation of words with the original writing or quote the action came from, please post :)
It can even be when somebody did something extreme from a couple of words
