Looking for an expression: "Build up the..."?

I can't remember the word I want so hoping someone can help me.
I want to say "build up the (something)".
And the word is something like, atmosphere, or excitement or anticipation.
But I can't quite put my finger on it.
It means like building up the atmosphere ready for what comes next.
