looking for advice on 1996 monster

Hi everyone and thanks in advance. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1996 monster 900 for $2000. I have checked kelly blue book and it looks like they are going for like 4k. It is a recovered stolen bike and has a broken ignition. I have read about the red key thing and how you have to buy a new ecu and gauge cluster etc for some ducs. Does this apply to the monster in 1996? Or is it only on newer ducs? I am having trouble finding specs for it on the web. Maybe because of its age. Anyone know about how much horsepower? I have owned several liter sport bikes and loved them except for the aches of long day rides. I am not ready for a cruiser yet. So I figured the monster is still sporty and a more upright riding position also. What kind of troubles should I look for Or can someone point me in the direction of some threads on this type of info.

thanks

are good places to learn about the Monster.

Depending on what's "broken," you may be able to get the ignition repaired, but ignition assemblies show up on Ebay all the time if you need a replacement. Because the ignition key also unlocks the seat lock, you'll need to keep the keys you already have.

After my dealer told me that a Ducati key blank was about $20, a friend told me that some Kawasaki motorcycle keys are almost identical, and a local locksmith shop cut a couple for me for less than $10.

thanks for the great info ! I do not have any more info on the bike It is a friend of a friend that has it. I will be checking it out this weekend.
