Looking for a virtual printer driver (or utility) to generate raster image output?

Are there are good printer drivers / utilities which generate hi-res raster images?

I want something to output minimum 300dpi at whatever size sheet I am printing (NOT just some low-res web image driver) and hopefully the ability to do 600dpi.

Is there anything for free?

Even if there are free ones, what are ones which might cost money or be shareware?
