Looking for a Sci-Fi book to read...?

So I am not really into science fiction, but I really want to try and read more of a thriller. Movies that I like that could be qualified as science fiction: A.I., I am Legend, Surrogate (haven't seen it but sounds good), and The Ruins(I know not very sci-fi). I know there are books on some of those but I don't want to read those. So any good recommendations?

Dean Koontz - The Taking. I love that book. I would tell you the theme but that would ruin the whole thing.

I Robot, by Isaac Asimov. Much better than the movie!

Star of Danger, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. First of the Darkover series. Terrific book!

The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Terrific story.

Heir to the Empire, by Timothy Zahn. A Star Wars book, but great reading! the villain is so likeable you'll find yourself rooting for the Empire.
