Looking for a responsible way to take out loans for college?

Hi,
My boyfriend and I are moving in together in one month. Next Spring we both start college. Both of us have pretty big dreams, he wants to be a doctor or at least a pharmacist for a few years before becoming an actual doctor, and I want to be a psychologist with a PH.D
Happily, I have a scholarship for my first three years of college. But then we have more than 10 years of education if you combine them between us. So we're going to need to take out loans to pay for college. I won't have to for at least three years, but when I do this advice may be helpful.
Can anyone tell me, preferably from experience a responsible way to take out a loan without damaging a credit score or falling too far into debt? I realize that there is no avoiding debt with minimum wage jobs and thousands of dollars in loans. I plan to save parts of my paychecks to help pay off the loans eventually so I'm not dirt poor when I first start out as a psychologist. I figure that is a good start.
Any other advice or helpful hints are appreciated.
