Looking for a Race Bike... Basic info/Help Needed...

Hey Guys,

So I am looking for a race bike and I am not sure what the best route to go is. I am thinking of looking for an '05 or newer bike, totaled with no frame damage or just a good deal on a downed bike with scratches, etc. Anybody know a good place to locate totaled bikes. Also, I know its a matter of preference, but whats a good 600 track bike? I know the R6, GSX-R and Ninja are the obvious. Any preference and why? I want something reliable with low mileage. I will more than likely pick up some track fairings and just beat the hell out of the bike on the track.

Any info, help, ideas, etc. are appreciated!

ALSO, what prices have you paid for your track bikes or used bikes youve purchased. I know a guy who bought an '08 R6 that was totaled for $2500 and all it needed was fairings. Is this normal. That would be my ideal situation. I would prefer to spend less than $4000.

get a used 848. like you said, look for one that is damaged but no frame damage. just turn it into an all out race bike. i track mine, its fun, i have a lot of confident in corners compared to my friend's 09 r6 when he let me rode it. it just feel more planted. there was one wrecked 848 on ebay selling for the price youre lookin at.

I've been looking for one! Colemans had one that was perfect but the insurance company wanted $5500 for it!! It had no frame damage but the dash was gone, etc. I think that's too much...

Xx1098xX,

I have an R6 track bike and also did about 200 track miles on a ZX6R track bike this summer. Performance wise, the two bikes are pretty similar. They accelerate, brake, and handle about the same. Basically fungible. The main difference I noticed was the shape of the tank. The Kawi tank is more angular, thereby providing a broader, firmer platform on which to push your inside knee into. I find the shape of the Kawi tank easier to grip and easier to push up into than the Yami tank.

In terms of track riding and lap times, that's huge. At least for me. In the spring I'm buying a ZX6R and selling the R6.

Great input!! I appreciate that! My ideal track bike would be an '07 ZX6-R. I had one for about a season and loved it!! Especially as it came stock with a slipper clutch. Now I just need to find a bike at a reasonable price that's track worthy.

after I went down on my 03 ZX6r 636 (I LOVED that bike) I should have bought it back from the insurance company... they wanted 1100 for it... but I didn't have the urge to hit the track like I do now... I guess riding a Ducati will do that to you.... my 6r had absolutely nothing more then cosmetics... but as with any sportbike thats expensive to fix... new fairings, headlights, (they figured the tank for a nickel sized dent) so it was totalled.
