Looking for a new touchscreen smartphone - need advice

I'm trying to find a new phone but haven't been able to find something that provides what I need. I have tried the Pre, and I am just as interested in the iPhone or the HTC EVO. Here are my needs in order of importance (1 being most important -can't do without that one)

1. The event reminder (calendar alert) needs to have customized times. For example, if I want to be reminded exactly 17 days before an event, I would like to be able to set that. My old phone, a Palm Treo, provided this feature. I can just type over the number in the reminder. I noticed the Pre and the iPhone only have a list of times to choose and they can not be customized (not sure about HTC).

2. Touchscreen - I've stayed away from Blackberries for this reason but I know they have something out now in the touchscreen market. Not sure if it meets my other requirements though.

3. I would prefer to sync with a desktop application for my contacts and an IMAP server for my email. I do not use google mail or Exchange and I'm not interested in either of these. Although if I did get the HTC, I wouldn't have an issue creating a google mail contact if it is needed to set up the phone - as long as I'd never be required to sync with it.

Anyone know of a good phone that might meed at least my first criteria?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What cell carrier do you plan to use? Wouldn't make sense to recommend a Sprint device if you used Verizon or an ATT 3G if you used TMO.

You can use Google Calendar to achieve the calendar reminders. It can send you a text message at any time you want it to to remind you. A smartphone is not needed just for that.

I agree with picking the provider first. That is the most important thing. After that, pick the device.

All 4 of those providers have pretty good coverage in my area. Any one of them would be fine.

I have tried both Sprint and Verizon and found them to be fairly equal in my area. I know that the AT&T plan would cost me more but I am willing to pay it for the right phone. I've been searching apps for the event alert functionality I need also but haven't been able to find it.

As for the calendar itself, if at all possible, I'd like to avoid using Google for that. I know everything is going in the cloud these days but I hold on to my own data as being private and I would rather not have contacts and appointments in the cloud.

That said, anyone know if any of the newer phones have an app for the event alert functionality I need?

Thanks!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A400 Safari/6531.22.7)

The samsung fascinate (verizon) coming out soon or so they say.

Just thought I'd post an update. I decided to go with the Sprint version of the fascinate mentioned by jamis_quest2007, the Epic. I should get it next week sometime. I verified that this phone allows custom times for the alert reminders in the calendar app.

The reason I chose the Sprint device was the QWERTY keypad.

Thanks everyone!
