looking for a new phone - frequency questions

Hi guys,

I replaced my 8801 a while back due to some software glitches and rather bad battery life.

I miss it.

A lot.

I am hoping to upgrade to something that solid, unusual, and cool. I know we've got the 8800 Sirocco out now, right? But I have seen nothing on if they are coming out with a USA version like the 8801 was to the 8800.

So, it is a UK triband, right.. 900/1800/1900. no 850mhz.

I don't mind dropping the coin on a freakin' sweet phone, but I don't want to do so if my coverage sucks.. So. Will this cause a problem for reception (in general and inside buildings) for me?

Or is there another sweet phone that holds a candle to the 8801 that does have the proper frequencies?

thanks in advance, guys

Your best bet is to buy some used, cheap, old nokia that doesn't have the 850 band (like find something on ebay that's less than $40) and use it for a few days to check out your coverage. Depending on where you live, you may not need 850mhz, I know I don't need it in Chicago or Milwaukee.

Something like this:

edit: I have no idea why it says nextel on the screen, but the 7210 is a gsm phone

Thanks for the reply, bd. yeah, I realize that'd be optimal to find out the coverage in my area. I was sort of hoping that I'd get some feedback on someone who just uses 1900 in a major metro sort of area and see how well it covers, penetrates buildings, etc.

I was also hoping someone could suggest an alternative to the 8800/8801..

I loved the solid feeling of the slider - really felt like quality. I've tried some of the other slides out there (like I think the samsung d807) and the slide was wiggly and sort of plasticy. (No offense intended to those that have one - just not my style. *(:=

I don't care about slider so much, I suppose. Just that "solid" feeling with a strong cool factor. The only requirements besides that are really basic - good reception/call quality, bluetooth, and not a humongoid blackberry-style pda that I can't really comfortably fit in a pocket. (Definitely not a holster sort of guy. heh)

thanks,
