looking for a good toronto suburb for our lifestyle?

my partner and i are looking to move to canada in a few years. i like the sounds of toronto because i've heard it is really diverse and open with a great goth scene. we would want to move someplace gay friendly (he's male and i'm female, but i'm bi, and we have a lot of gay friends) and goth friendly (i'm not sure if the suburbs are slightly less tolerant of different lifestyles than the city itself).

we would need a decent sized yard because we have a mastiff, and he wants to have a mastiff in our household for the rest of our lives. i would also prefer someplace that is not specifically family oriented. even though he has a 7 year old son, he will probably be 10 or 11 by then, and i want to be able to go out places that are not geared towards children (just a nice coffee shop or something where there are not a lot of screaming babies and/or toddlers would be nice).

also, i would prefer someplace near public transportation (we both drive, but i'd like to have the option not to have to worry about parking all the time).

i know this is really specific and all, but i have no clue what living in toronto is really like. we'd obviously go for a visit or two first, but i'd like a good idea of where to start.
good points. i don't really need a suburb per se, just someplace with some sort of a yard. not huge, but big enough for a lazy dog to be comfortable in when she's outside.

and as long as there isn't a high violent crime rate (i'm not too concerned with robbery, more rape and homicide) then i'd be fine. i've lived in both ny and la.
