Can anyone reccommend a good camera that takes high quality sharp pictures for my photography assignments at university? I hear SLR ones are the best ones to get but they're so pricey.

Canon D60. Bout 7 mega pixels and you could get a second hand one for $300 or less. They have all the settings u need.

DSLR's are very pricy and you must worry about changing out lenses and dust getting in the camera. I use a superzoom camera. It does not have a changeable lens but has 12x optical zoom. You can get a superzoom for about $250 -$300. If this is just a basic class, that type of camera should be sufficient.

SLRwith 50mm. lens is a very good place to start.
Try pawn shop and/or ebay.
Probably should stick with well known manufacturers: Canon, Pentax, etc.

You need to make a decision according to your own needs... everyone's needs are different.
