Looking for a good book - read additional details (they're not long)?

I want something I can really get absorbed into, you know?

Something like The Secrets of Jin Shei and then The Embers of Heaven, where there was this fantasy kingdom based loosely on realy life, or something like the Gormenghast Trilogy - a sprawling oasis of lyricism. I also liked Lilly Aphrodite and most of Joanne Harris' fiction.

Or just anything good. Insightful, witty, interesting.

A good fantasy book I've read this year was The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Great world-building and an exciting story once you got into it.

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis is also great. It's a time-travel story that takes place partly in future Oxford where a mysterious virus has broken out and in the 14th century during the Black Death where a history student from the future ends up. It's one of my favourite books ever.

Umm... I didn't read those books so I can't really be very accurate in my recommendations. But if you love fantasy worlds why don't you try reading the Dune Series? They're really absorbing and the habits and customs of the world he describes are really interesting. Also the LOtR series? (even though they've been too commercialized they're really amazing).

Rabbit, Run by John Updike is an amazing book. I just finished it yesterday, and it is still lingering on my mind. It's so real, and insightful, it really makes you think.
