He thinks its called 'The Great Game' or something like that, and is 3 books in 1. He says it was about a guy, and different types of magic like necromancer, heralds, healers etc, and it turned out he was all of them. Then he meets these other people, who are the best at each type of magic and learns things from them. He also said there was a queen and a prince. On the cover there was a picture of a chessboard. And i know its definitely not the Dave Duncan books.. Anyone know??
