Looking for a book about a young boy who learns special powers from a mysterious

stranger? I must have read this book over 10 years ago... some of the things I can recall about it:
1. He learns teleportation; he practiced this by looking through a ring and focusing on the location inside the ring
2. I believe he stops a car by telekinetically pressing on the brake
3. The mysterious man who teaches him disappears at the end of the story, and the house in which the man lived ends up being abandoned
