Location ID

I now have all my receivers connected to phone lines and don't get the call anymore.

I was just wondering.....im moving back to the states anyways....gonna have dishnetwork then....

i was just like knowing how satellite stuff works.....

doesnt make much sense on bells part...you think they could come up with some sort of better system to avoid people doing the sharing...the easiest would be to just limit each house to 4 tv's....how many people really need more than that....

a system that can be beaten by just not picking up the phone....thats pretty odd...

Thanks for the replies. I own 5 receivers. 4 for my house and 1 I take with me when I leave. I got a call from Bell saying that they wanted my receiver's info. Before I bought a Bell system I asked how many receivers I could have. They said 6. The operator told me I could take one in my cabin. Now they are harassing me for all these numbers. I keep my 5th receiver plugged in at my cabin which is an hour away. I was going to go today and get the numbers off of it, but will that be any use if the Location ID chages every 10 minutes(4100) They told me they could shut me down(all receivers) if I don't provide those numbers within 24 hours. I'm upset because I pay for the full package +NHL Center Ice, MLB Extra Innings, NFL Sunday Ticket, and the NCAA channels. I'm very seriously considering going to Star Choice, but they don't have MLB extra Innings. Thank you again .

that must be a rare case...there's noway the dishnet people would make you read 4 location ID's simultaneously....how is that a possibility in one house, four rooms....

All i've heard is that you have to read each location ID....and not to have another phone with you if your talking to somebody via sharing....

still is beyond me how with all of the N3 upgrades that they're doing they couldnt come up with a better system to rid of satellite sharing...

and the other stuff as well...slingbox...too many ways of getting by the bell phone call....seems like this format Bell is using is pretty much just kiddie proof...

If BellTV verifies the location ID and you are not able to provide the info on one or some of your receivers those receivers will be deactivated right away.

Those receivers could only be restarted by completing a second verification (which can only be done 24h after the first one) of ALL the receivers

If you want you receivers active at 2 locations BellTV will offer you 2 choices:
-Having 2 seperate accounts, therefore 2 bills, and be worry free
-Using the flip flop option. BellTV will write down which receivers are at residence A and which are at residence B. They will write down in details the receiver number and their location. They will advise you that only A or B could active, not both of them simultaneously. They will put a SAT note (tag) on your account to make sure all receivers are not active at the same time. They will give you the SAT group number and tell you to give them a call to switch your active location

glu If you tell them about your cottage their policy is for you to call them when you go to the cottage. They want only your house or your cottage receivers active, not both locations at same time. I think they ask for about a 1/2 hour to make the switch at no charge.

Location ID, as said changes every 10 minutes. Therefore you can not take the location ID at your cabin, drive home and call them to give them the info, cause the number will be wrong and when that happens the receiver is automatically deactivated.

According to the service contract all receivers should be connected to a telephone line at any time. When they are it provides BellTV the location ID and they could establish if one or some receivers are not at the same location then others. In the case that one or more receivers are not "dialling out" (meanning they are not connected to a telephone line) you number is put on a list to be called by SAT team to make a verification. You are more likely to be called if you have 3 receivers or more, but it is also possible that they call you if you have less then 3.

After 3 times that they speak to the account owner and that he refuses to do the verification they deactivate some of his receivers leaving only 2 active. The receivers could only be restarted by completing the verfication. If some of the receivers could not be verified during the verification they will remain deactivated. If some receivers could not be tested and remain deactivated you need to wait 24h before you call again and have them reactivated. The agent will need to verify all your receivers again to be able to reactivate it.

The solution for the OP will be to take the receiver he has at the cabin and bring it home. He could then call BellTV and perform the verification. Once he "passed" that verification he could bring i9t back at the cabin and be worry free...until next verification

Glu, a simple solution would be if you have internet at the cabin hook up a sling box to the receiver, then could see it any time you want.

I'd do feel your pain, funny thing is I've been with Bell for 12 yrs and have never had you units hooked to a phone line with no hassle's from Bell. Now that I posted this I'm sure they'll call... lol

A slingbox is a GREAT idea. Trouble is the OP probably doesn't have HS Internet at their cottage.

Thanks Ex Agent. I have two receivers working right now. They want information for all six receivers during the same call, so I cannot do one at a time on different days. Could I give them the info for one receiver, then unhook it quickly and hook up another receiver to get the info for that receiver?

Another question I have would Bell know if I have one receiver in Calgary and one at Sylvan Lake just from the location ID?

What will they all ask for. I'm guessing receiver #, smartcard #, bootstrap, and locationID. Can I expect anything else?

What happens in this case if your one of the increasing number of households that use a cell phone in place of a landline?????

Yes, you can hook one up, give the info they ask for, then hook up another, you just need them to wait on the phone.

As stated, the Location ID is based on the Receiver ID and the time and has nothing to do with the physical location of the unit. This topic has been covered extensively in existing posts.

The "location ID" tells them nothing about where the machine is. The only way they could tell that would be for the receiver to be connected to a phone line and for Bell to look at the caller-ID info. In general, if all of your receivers are connected to a phone line they won't bother you with the location ID calls. The receivers will call Bell TV periodically which will confirm to Bell that they're all in the same place (or at least using the same phone number).

As mentioned by others, the location ID is a number that changes in a fashion that is mathematically predictable, but known only to Bell. Having you read that number back to them supposedly confirms that you are physically situated in front of the receiver, which confirms that all of your receivers are in the same place since they make you do all receivers at the same time.

The cable companies complained about "cottage" service and the CRTC made the satellite companies stop allowing customers to have one account used for service at two locations. Their answer for handling "cottage" situations now is that you tell them which receivers are at home vs. the cottage, and only one set of receivers is active at a time.

In your case, if you only have two receivers active you should ask them to deactivate the other four. You can call and get them re-activated if/when you hook them up again in the future. You might be able to have them sit and wait while you do the ol' switcharoo with the receiver hookups, but it takes the receivers long enough to boot up that I wonder if they (and you) will want to wait through all of that.

You could still use the BellTV service if you don't have a land line at home...to respet Bell's policies it has to be mentionned when placingthe order, and preferably have the technican write it down on the papers he makes you sign. The only disadvantage you will have is, that, since your receivers are not dialling out BellTV COULD call you, as this hole thread mentions, to verify the location ID of your receivers. SAT departement prefers to call on a land line, but will accept to make the call on a cell phone.

You need to have either a cordless telephone or a cell phone to proceed the "verification" since you have to go from one receiver to another

The SAT departement is usually suppposed to disconnect all receivers that are currently not hooked up to a TV (or if you prefer refuse that you disconnect one unit to plug another) as it usually is a sign of a client that brought in the receivers used at the cottage to make the verification who will return the unit to the cottage once the verification has been done. Lots of agents to avoid a confrontation, to avoid customer frustration or threats to disconnect will let you proceed anyways.
