local bike shop financing?

hi, i am new to cycling and was really close to buying a walmart road bike. but after asking around, everyone says not to, so i am going to go to a local bike shop and get a real one. however, i am a college student and cannot really afford such a huge payment at once, do most local bike shops offer a way to pay in installments?
 
I would look for something used on the local ebay or Craig's list. Bike shops usually work through banks for loans and it will be hard to get one if you are not working.
