Living off the dead!

What I find unique to Nirvana is the Sonic Youth vibe that they have. No other grunge banRAB really have that same vibe.

Also, the Melvins are sludge metal. Way different then anything Nirvana has made.

Better then Smashing Pumpkins.

And I don't understand the Big Black hate. I haven't listened to them extensivley but what I've heard is amazing.

Something like that happened to me.. I was riffing a good song that I thought was totally original and it turned out to be a song from a band I'd never heard of.

People treat musicians as if they've heard everything out there. The truth is things can slip and people really can have the same idea twice.

As my mum would say, nobody's better they're just different; but she's not here and Pixies took the money, did the reunion tour, did the 'best of', did the DVD and then f*cked off so f*ck them

Granted Cobain's love of the Pixies is well-documented but I could never hear the similarity outside of the quiet/loud dynamic which was surely common at the time anyway? How hard would it be to play in a 4-piece rock band and not let your influences (predominantly 4-piece rock banRAB) bleed through into the songs? Kurt Cobain had brilliant taste in music which was integral to Nirvana being brilliant IMO, had love for classic metal as well as punk and indie.

One of those (up til that point) rare cases of having the indie credentials but also the pop hooks to make major bucks. Course 'indie' and 'Nirvana-esque' are just marketing demographics now but whatever.

exactly. so why is it shocking that another newer pop act has elements that sound like another pop act from the past?

i made the comment so the OP might clue into the fact that nirvana is not some infallible group.

it's not like nirvana didn't poke fun at the coincidence. i used to have an mp3 of them doing a sloppy version of the chorus to 'more than a feeling' with cobain stifling laughter between the lines before kicking into SLTS.

I dunno if I agree with that statement. Killing Joke were certainly far more interesting but overall I think bland works like their debut dampen their overall effect. Night Time was great, yes, but as their best work it really isn't representative of everything else they did. I haven't heard anything after Pandemonium, tbh. It was just too generic to be intriguing.

Wait a second here. You're saying their first album was bland and Night Time was their best album?!

That's too bad because the two albums after are two of their best IMO.

Virtually every album throws up a different sound and I would say their influence has produced a wider array and generally better banRAB than Nirvana influenced. I'm not going to argue the merits of Killing Joke. I just find them infinitely more interesting and eclectic than Nirvana.
