Live Action Shows/Movies given a cartoon follow up: Using the original actors.

Generally whenever a famous live action show or movie is given a cartoon follow up or adaptation, networks will usually go for voice actors who imitate the original actors. Original actors may decline because the price isn't right or they don't want to be associated with a cartoon.

All fine and dandy, but lets look for scenario where the original actor(s) return to voice the animated version of their character:

A. Star Trek The Animated Series: To my knowledge this is the earliest instance where a cartoon does use the original actors to do voice work (if I'm wrong, I'd be curious to know what cartoon was the first). Basically the idea was to make this as close to the three seasons of the original series (at the time the only prior series) as possible.

As a result you have pretty much all of the cast (except Walter Koenig as Chekov, but he did contribute by writing The Infinite Vulcan or The Infinite Wulcan as his character would say) back:

William Shatner as James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, DeForest Kelly as Leonard Bones McCoy, James Doohan as Montgomery Scott, Majel Barrett as Christine Chapel, George Takei as Hikaru Sulu and Nichelle Nichols as Nyota Uhura.

Though from several online sources and books, it was mentioned that James Doohan and Majel Barrett were to originally voice Sulu and Uhura to save costs. Upon hearing about it, Nimoy threatened to walk out unless George and Nichelle were brought in to provide the voices of their characters.

Also, three of the guest actors from The Original Series returned for an episode to voice the characters they originally played. You had Mark Lenard as Sarek (Yesteryear), Stanley Adams as Cyrano Jones (More Tribbles, More Troubles) and Roger C. Carmel as Harry Mudd (Mudd's Passion).

B. The New Adventures of Batman: Okay, it's merely another Batman series rather than a tie in to the original live action show, but it does have Adam West and Burt Ward reprising the roles they previously played as Batman and Robin. Adam West would of course voice Batman again in Superfriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show and The Super Powers Team Galactic Guardians.

C. Back To The Future: Rather than Michael J. Fox voicing the character, the role went to David Kaufman (who coincidently voiced Fox's other character Stuart in Stuart Little The Animated Series). For some reason, even though Christopher Lloyd was available to play Dr. Brown again, his animated counterpart was voiced by Dan "Homer J Simpson" Castenella.

However, Tom Wilson reprised his role as Biff Tannen (and continuing to play other Tannens as well), and Mary Steenburgen reprised her role as Clara Clayton Brown.

D. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures: Alex Winters and Keanu Reeves returned to play Bill & Ted respectively, but were replaced in Season 2. George Carlin returned to play Rufus (the guy who gave them the phone booth, not the Naked Mole Rat from Kim Possible;)) and Bernie Casey voiced Mr. Ryan.

Any other situations?

Fonz and the Happy Days Gang (ABC, 1980-1982) - A Saturday morning cartoon featuring characters from Happy Days. Henry Winkler (The Fonz), Ron Howard (Richie) and Don Most (Ralph Malph) reprise their roles from the prime-time sitcom.

Same deal with Jackie Chan Adventures. The real life Jackie Chan regularly appeared in live action Q & A segments just before the end credits, but the animated Jackie was voiced by James Sie.

The Clerks cartoon featured Brian O'Hallaran (Dante), Jeff Anderson (Randall) Jason Mewes (Jay) and of course Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) from the movie.

Star Wars: Droids featured Anthony Daniels as C-3P0

I seem to recall that James Woods practically demanded that he be allowed to continue voicing Hades in the Hercules animated series, rather than letting the part be recast.

The entire cast of Star Wars -- including Harrison Ford -- reprised their characters for the animated "follow up" in the infamous Holiday Special. (Since it was intended to be a pilot for a proposed series, I wonder if they would have continued participating with the series as well.)

That always bugged me. Even as a kid I always thought, "If he can play Doc in those live-action segments, why can't he play Doc in the animated ones?" Haha!!

the proposed Buffy cartoon. There's a few minutes you can find on Youtube and it has the actors from the show except for Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Ben Stein who played Stanley Ipkiss' psychiatrist in the movie The Mask, also voiced the character in the animated series.

Let's not forget the Hanna-Barbera-produced The Dukes, starring the voices of the cast from The Dukes of Hazzard, from 1983 on CBS. Here's the cast:

1982-83 season:

Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke
Denver Pyle as Uncle Jesse Duke
James Best as Roscoe P. Coltrane
Sorrell Booke as J.D. "Boss" Hogg
Frank Welker as Flash, the dog & Smokey, the racoon
Christopher Mayer as Vance Duke
Byron Cherry as Coy Duke

1983-84 season:

Tom Wopat as Luke Duke
John Schneider as Bo Duke

The car chases in the cartoon took place all around the world, and although 20 total episodes were produced, in my opinion, the latter 7 episodes with Tom and John in the principal cast, was almost like the Duke family, as we knew them from most of the show's prime time run, were doing double duty. Those latter 7 episodes were initially as the cartoon program was intended to be like from the beginning. It's a shame that a salary dispute in 1982, between the prime time show's producers and Tom and John, took away much of what the cartoon show could've been like from the beginning, but that's just my take on it.

Not much, but another came to mind. Nick Balay who voiced Salem on Sabrina The Teenage Witch also provides the voice for him on Sabrina The Animated Series.

Laverne & Shirley in the Army (ABC)-Penny Marshall (Laverne) and Cindy Williams (Shirley) reprised their roles from the ABC live-action sitcom, up until the episodes with the Fonz (again voiced by Henry Winkler).

Ruby-Spears' animated Mork & Mindy segments (ABC) featured the voices of Robin Williams (Mork), Pam Dawber (Mindy), Conrad Janis (Mr. McConnel) and Bob James (Orson) from the live-action series.

It's Punky Brewster (NBC)- Soliel Moon Frye (Punky), George Gaines (Henry Warnimont), Cherie Johnson (Cherie), Ami Foster (Margaux) and Casey Ellison (Allen) likewise reprised their roles from the concurrent live-action show.

Paul Fusco voiced ALF in both the t.v. show and the two animated series. I'm also pretty sure that the actor who played Willie got a three second cameo (as a puppet version of Willie named H.A.L.F. ) in the second season.

Hellboy: Blood and Iron and Sword of Storms

Hercules and Xena: The Battle For Mount Olympus.

The X-Files' Mulder and Scully and the cast of Cheers in The Simpsons.

Edit: Forgot a couple. Both The Brady Kids and Gilligan's Island/ Planet had a bunch of the original cast members from the sitcoms they were based upon.

Some more examples came to mind. Much like Adam West voicing Batman, these cartoons don't follow a live action continuity, but are part of the same franchise:

1. Lou Ferrigno who play the Hulk in The Inceredible Hulk series played the same role in the 1996 Animated Series of the same name. And considering that he wanted the Hulk to speak at one point in the LA series, I imagine he enjoyed providing a voice for the talking Hulk.

2. Not a major reprise, but The Trickster was voiced in an episode Justice League Unlimited by Mark Hamill, who played the same character in The Flash tv series.

3. The Super Hero Squad Show has several voice actors in this occasion. Shawn Ashmore (who played Iceman in the 3 X-Men films) provided the voice for Iceman. Ray Stevenson (who played The Punisher in Punisher War Zone) provided the voice of The Punisher.

...which is ironic since his voice was never heard in the original TV series. Hulk's roars and other vocal SFX were performed by Ted Cassidy (for the first couple seasons), who also voiced the show's opening narration.

Sabrina:TAS was a younger version of Sabrina, so I don't think it would've worked with Melissa Joan Hart as the title character. However, MJH voiced both of Sabrina's aunts for the series.

And I'm nitpicking, but it's actually Nick Bakay.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovney also reprised their X-Files roles in a cameo on "Eek! The Cat."

Some contributions of my own:

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (2000)
While not based on a live-action movie, the "Buzz Lightyear" TV series had Wayne Knight as Emperor Zurg. Although Andrew Stanton voiced Zurg in Toy Story 2, Knight did voice Al the toy collector in the film, and I thought it was fitting that he also voiced Zurg for the TV series.

The Penguins of Madagascar (2009)
Also not based on a live-action movie, but Andy Richter reprises his role as Mort and Tom McGrath as Skipper from the "Madagascar" film series for Nickelodeon's TV series.

Alvin & The Chipmunks (1983)
This one is in reverse: Janice Karman, wife of Ross Bagdasarian Jr (son of the Chipmunks' creator), was the singing voice of Theodore and the Chipettes in the 80s TV series, and surprisingly also did the same for both hybrid feature films.

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids
(1972)
I'm making this one fit the discussion since the show was based on Cosby's childhood stories from his stand-up comedy routines. Since it's based on Cosby's childhood, it's only fitting that Bill voiced the kid version of himself. (Coz also voiced Captain Brainstorm for his Nick Jr series "Little Bill" which was based on his kids' book.)

The New Three Stooges (1965)
Curly, Moe and Larry all reprised their roles for this series -- appearing in live-action segments and voicing their namesakes for the animated shorts.

It's Punky Brewster (1985)
Soleil Moon Frye reprises her role as the voice of the title character from the live-action TV series.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990)
John Astin voiced Dr. Gangreen and played the same character in three live-action movies.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004)
Several of the film series' original cast reprised their roles for this animated DVD movie: Vin Diesel, Keith David, Nick Chinlund and Rhiana Griffith.

Spaceballs: The Animated Series (2008)
Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga and Joan Rivers all reprised their roles from the original movie.

As mentioned in the speculation thread for Ultimate Spider-Man, JK Simmons will be reprising his role as J Jonah Jameson (which he played in the Sam Raimi films).
