I like to read in bed before I fall asleep. Could you recommend some 19th or 20th C, European authors who write good, pleasant stories/novels with straightforward storylines/plots?

Anthony Trollope, a 19th century british victorian novelist - start with "The Warden" or the Barchester Tower series (which includes the warden). Wonderful stuff for night time reading.
