From personal experiences blade I would have to disagree and agree.
I use to cuss big time when a car would pull out on me when I was younger riding my bikes saying, "God, can't you see you idiot". Well I am now 60 and actually can see better than when I was twenty because of the wonder of modern medicine....NEW eyes so to speak and vision of 20/5 I have been told. Living most of the time in a major city I have found myself (a true long term motorcycle rider ) actually doing what I sayed earlier in life I would never do, pull out in front of a bike. The plain truth of the matter is in these busy times of how we now live versus even 20 years ago, makes us less observate to our surroundings. Our minds are normally every where except where they should be at any given time. I have pulled flat out in front of bikes before with no one really at fault just because at that moment the bike just blended into the surroundings and became for a few seconds invisible. Talk about feeling like a heel, when the biker was rightfully cussin me out.....cussin out what I term a seasoned bike rider! Never thought it could turn around like that because of my constant involvement with bikes.
I strongly believe, lights, flashing or not, loud pipes, bright color clothing, half naked or anything else that draws attention to a bike is a worthy thing for a bike rider. I now have sympathy to the car owners that were driving the several times I have collided with them in similiar circumstances. There never had a chance to miss me.
In recent times with all the new headlight types of bulbs , haleogen, Blue Lights, etc. things certainly are out of hand. Many of these lights whether on a bike or in a car on the Interstate are blinding. For most normal young people with good eyes I even hear many of them complaining about them. In the day and age we live in now and all the lazic surgery going on these new wave headlights produce bad adverse effects. Star gazing and just for seconds complete loss of clear vision. This mainly because of the scarring lazic leaves that only becomes really noticeable when encountered with these lights in night time condidtions. In daylight this adverse effect does not happen normally. I myself encountered this for many years but now have inplants and this is much better in not having the star lights at night time.
In my opinion and what I have encountered and seen bright lights on in the daytime DO NOT blind anyone but it sure catches their attention unless they are smokin a du-be or drunk. Nothin is going to help you with these fools. Just pack a piece and hopefully before you die you can take them with you and help some other biker out later down the road.
Personally for the best looks on a bike in my mind is riding with no lights on but I certainly in the minority there (it also shows my age and how things like lights being on in the day time were thought about). Its like helmet laws....I believe in helmets and like wearing them "most of the time" . I just do not like being told to do it. The same for me is true with headlights and rear view mirrors. I want it to be my choice whether to turn them on of where to mount them no matter how much I believe they help save lives.
