Lightly stepping on brake pedal?

So, do the brake lights come on even if you lightly step on the pedal? Or does there need to be a certain amount of pressure to trigger the lights? I'm driving with a permit right now but I was just wondering.. because when I drive I like to tap on the brakes to slow down a bit, not sure if the lights going on/off sometimes confuses drivers around me. Thanks in advance
